Don't threaten me with a good time

Greeneville, TN

« on: February 27, 2017, 05:39:11 AM »

We had a great ride in Franklin, WV a few years ago
Followed by an even better one in Marion, VA the following year. Thanks to Highbinder and LadyDraco.

We will be returning to the Hillbilly Highways over Memorial Day Weekend (Friday May 26th - Sunday May 28th)

Ground Zero will be in the Pikeville, Kentucky area. We will be visiting historical sites from the Hatfield and McCoy feud as well as the Mine Wars.

Ride, routes, sites, and motel information will be provided in a follow up posting by Smokin Joe after the scouting ride in a few weeks

Sites to include the following
-Paw Paw tree site (Where the Hatfield's executed Randall McCoy's 3 sons)
-Anderson (Devil Anse) Hatfield family cemetery
-The Coal House - House built in 1933 from 65 tons of coal

I hope everyone can make it out to enjoy some beautiful scenery through Kentucky and West Virginia

It does sound like a blast.  Hatfield and McCoy feud seems appropriate since Randall McCoy just passed ( Bill Paxton,  RIP - great acting career )

Preston, thanks to you and Joe for reviving a great ride and get together. Hopefully we can make this one too... We have way to much going on this year, youngest graduating HS and off to College and the oldest getting married, and all this in a time span of less than 3 months.   crazy2
We will see if we can make it, it will be cutting it close.....  Smiley

Reb & Joe:

We stay in Pikeville often when returning from TN/NC/VA. Only 400 miles from home.
There is a Mexican joint next to Holiday Inn (~$100) with a bar. Its OK.
There are a few other hotels, they looked kind of shady...  coolsmiley
One hotel we thought looked OK is a little on the north end of town (Coal Train Town neighborhood?) you can recognize it has large smoked black plate glass windows on East side of 23...

I'm sure y'all will check it out and find a decent place at a decent rate.

Lookin forward!

You think we fine southern folks could afford 100$ a night? You must be so lucky to afford them amenities of wifi, power, and running water at your fancy smancy Holiday Inns.

Looking forward to seeing you my northern friend...

Sounds like a great way to spend Memorial Day weekend.  Since the holiday is Monday 5-29 and a lot of people have that day off, have you thought of making the ride start on Sat instead of Fri so it would end on Monday as the ride back day?  It is hard to get enough vacation days for all the riding we want to do...but we will caught up with you all either way  Wink

We have 2 or 3 on the radar, plans to check them out on the scouting ride. I have a ride to visit several sites on back roads. The scouting ride is intended to take a look at all of them with a smaller group then narrow down the best sites and roads for a larger crowd.

I can say already not everyone will be able to see Devil Anse Hatfields burial spot, as the hill to walk up is very steep. Certain folks won't be able to walk it, we will have to probably split the group up at that point if we have a large turn out.
