Chuck Berry, a guitarist and singer-songwriter, was considered a founder of rock 'n' roll in the '50s. He had dozens of hits such as "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Maybellene" and "Sweet Little Sixteen."

"If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry,' John Lennon once said.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry was born in St. Louis on Oct. 18, 1926. He began his musical career at age 15, when he performed his own version of Jay McShann's "Confessin' the Blues.

I actually worked for him for a couple years when I was a teenager. I used to mow his property south of Wentzville Mo. Used to cut 20 acres once a month.  Was a cool guy, he had a studio at his house, and got to listen to several recording sessions. Always liked most of his music.

How lucky for you Grumpy, what a memory.

Lennon was right.  What a true Icon. He influenced so many musicians.   Of course later we found out he was influenced by Marty McFly.   Johnny B. Goode will always remain one of my favorite songs.
I got to see him circa 1974 at the Midland County Fair.  I think he played with Muddy Waters that night.
Afterwards we had a party at a buddies.  We got hungry and went out for pizzas or beer, probably both around 1 am.  Out on Saginaw rode we saw this bum walking all draped over with a blanket.  We all laughed and then a buddy said hey I think that Mike.  We stopped and sure enough it was our friend.  Man the laughter broke out big time.  Somehow he had lost his ride and walked about 4 miles towards home, pretty wasted to say the least.  We took him back to the party.

RIP Chuck.  I do hope they bury you with your Ding A Ling.

Chuck was a personal favorite, back when true rock 'n roll was in. The last 20 yrs. or so it has devolved into loud metal and a lot of screaming, not music to these ears. But....to each his own, like a good joke...you had to be there or you won't get it or appreciate it. Saw him live one time, that man could sweat up a storm and keep right on playing. So, 90 years, he had a good run.  cooldude

I attended his concerts in Detroit many times.

They called James Brown the hardest working man in show business, but no one worked harder than Chuck.  He was a real showman.

We boogied in the kitchen
We boogied in the hall
I got some on my finger so I wiped it on the wall

RIP.

And of course the original

And the real original 1958

The changes through the years is pretty amazing.

I was amazed by the solo he went off on! Almost a minute of a 3 minute song. I didn't think they did that back in 1958. The audience was kinda stiff but a few guys on the side were getting into it.
