So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: March 21, 2017, 05:11:38 AM »

I know this one is a bit "out there" but, I came across an opportunity that I thought I would share.

First let me say, I am not really interested in transporting these but, would gladly quote you a price though, I do not consider my rig as an ideal option. I am weight limited. Won't put over 6 tons on my trailer. While I would, can and could, I don't view my equipment as the best way to do this. I don't want to put that much weight on my rig and the weight limit would limit me, the most I would load would significantly limit the value of such a venture. I don't think it would be worth it to the person buying these. Regardless, here is what I have an opportunity to get.

800 rail road ties, I presume they are treated for preservation but, I don't know with what. In excellent condition. 10 and 12 foot lengths. Estimated to weigh 400 lbs. each. $3.00 each. They are located on the east coast, near Philly, PA. You now know what I know about them. I don't personally want any nor am I seeking to transport them but, am also willing to get involved but transporting isn't free.

I would recommend buying a semi load if one is interested in order to keep the transport fees as low as possible per tie. What you do with them is up to you.

I am not involved in making a dime off of this.   I'll be happy to put you in touch with the seller.

Wow, that would make an excellent block house (and bike shed).  If you had a crane to move and stack them all.

Wanted one of these ever since I saw one at Mackinaw Island.   cooldude
Needs a little bit bigger rifle ports though.

Then my county would make me take it down.   Angry

Yes, but don't call it that, the EPA will have a feeding frenzy and require an environmental impact study and fine you a bazillion dollars.

Grin you are probably right  cooldude After you posted that pic I thought they could make a nice, cheap little shop. But then I thought with our 128* summers, the fumes emanating off of them might kill off my last 2 remaining brain cells. 2funny

When I lived in Garrison Texas a lot of ties were cut in that area and I believe they were sent to Houston for "treating". Long time ago when I hauled flat bed had a chance to haul some outa New Mexico to Colorado but the truck owner nixed it. RIDE SAFE.

Rob,
If that structure had sufficient ventilation, it might not be a problem for those remaining brain cells.   I said might............   Check your phone, sent you a pic of the pile of ties...

Not 100% sure but, I thought or think all those ties are Oak.

Rob,
I realize that, I was trying to be kind.   I'm not suggesting anything about the four years you spent in Algebra one class.   Smiley

OK folks, I'm jesting, I have no idea how many years Rob spent taking Algebra...............   2funny

Lived in a house in NY for awhile that the guy made the house for himself and use creosoted beams in it. It always had a smell in the house of it, not a bad smell but you knew what it was when you opened the door. Pretty house well built and you never had to worry about termites. I know down here the RR is using cement ties instead of wood.
