Drive thru conversation. What can I get for you. A large black coffee. Do you want cream and sugar. No , a large black coffee. Do you want cream. No, a large black coffee. Do you want sugar. No, a large black coffee. You don't want cream and sugar. Yes , a large coffee with cream and sugar , only leave out the cream and sugar. . That will be a dollar and seven cents.

I drove out and went some where else.

Know what you mean, drives me nuts in a drive through when I ask for a plain hamburger. I get asked if I want cheese on it so I ask does a PLAIN hamburger have cheese. No! So what did I ask for...."a plain hamburger." So I say...."then how do you get it mixed up when I ask for a plain burger, causing you to ask if I want cheese." "So...no cheese then, do you want lettuce and tomato?" So I ask again if a plain burger has that on it...."no." Then why do you ask....and it goes on and on. One day I simply asked the little darlin if she had a "plain burger" button on her machine. "Yes I do" so I said "punch it twice." She did and asked if I wanted something to drink...."yes, a senior coffee w/one shot of cream." I pulled up to the window just the resident Einstein was pouring my coffee, then over to the creamer machine and hit it three times...then handed it to me. I didn't take it but asked him what the order said; "uh, one shot of cream, so what's the problem." I told him a story about an idiot that converted one shot into three and handed me a cup of cream with a little coffee. "Uh, so what do you want me to do?" I poured the coffee out on the ground, handed him the cup and said start over. His answer was classic; "sorry dude, I don't follow you." I drove away without the coffee. And some of them want $15/hr., seriously??????

I've never worked at a fast food joint, but I know in other businesses they are required to ask for upgrades. It sucks and I will freely admit I never do it. But some people just do as they're told regardless. In this day of secret shoppers videoing the employees and being judged on it, some feel pressured to do everything they are told regardless whether it makes sense or not.

I have no doubt there are young people who are lacking in their education. But I also remember guys I went to school with who couldn't read at a third grade level, but kept getting advanced on to the next grade. All the way thru graduation. As to the figuring change, I think a lot of that has to do with technology . We subconsciously were figuring change in our heads all the time because we had to. Now from the time they are born they have a phone or some other device which figures everything for them. I'm sure if we grew up like that we would be lacking also. Hell most of the time there is no change, it's all debit cards.
I'm just skeptical that our generation is inherently smarter, harder working, more moral, etc. that many seem to believe .

Back in my EMT days,  I had just spent some time mopping blood out of the ambulance (long and deeply unpleasant story) and I was thirsty. My partner and I headed into a local deli for a tasty beverage. "I'd like a Coke please", I said. "what size?", the clerk replied. "Small please"

Then he said something that made my head explode, my eyes bleed and my bowels become irregular. "I'm sorry, we don't have small, we only have medium and large"

I calmly replied "No, Asshammer, you only have small and large. You have to have at least three sizes in order to have a medium. Medium literally means "in between" probably taken from median meaning the center. Ok? Do you understand what I'm saying here?

"So, do you want a medium or a large?"

sigh. Medium's fine, thanks.

Here, they shuck the kids through like peanuts. It doesn't matter what a kid has learned he / she advances.  Even in sports this "no one looses" is taught from a young age. Everyone gets a trophy.

I was always told that you had to fail some to learn how to win or succeed.  To work harder to get to a goal. IMHO, the educational system is and has been failing in too many ways. But, so are the parents to allow this to go on. As for parents of today. Parents are too busy trying to be their kids friend instead of a parent. Just look around, it's plain to see. This doesn't pertain to all parents, but a good share of them.

Yup frustrating when they dont listen not unusual and if you say something that shocks them out of their world and they start to communicate then its usually ok.

I no longer go through the drive thru for two reasons.

1. It takes ten minutes for my wife to look over the menu, decide what she whats then decide what she doesn't want then i have to relay all of that to a speaker and get it right.

2. I like to look a person in the eye to make sure they understand.

Some of these young folks are simply asking what they are trained and instructed to ask.  You may know what you mean by a "plain burger" but they may be regularly faced by someone who doesn't have that understanding.  A very bad experience for a business is to deliver something that is not what the customer thought he requested.

I have found life must less frustrating when I assume any communication/expectation mismatch is as much my fault as someone else's.  I tell my children to remember that about half the people with whom they do business today will be below average in intelligence.  That's true for you and for me.  That's also true for the young person on the other side of the counter.

I never go through the drive thru. At the counter I can see if they don't get the order right.

A few years ago I had the occasion to get a room at the Hampton Inn in Columbus, Ohio.  The computer was down and the clerks (plural) could not figure the room, local and state taxes.  I did it in my head and then had to prove it to them by using their calculator.

Yep. All I can figure is they pay them more and make it part of the job
to be (seem?) clean and courteous. I sometimes think the food is kind of
ho-hum, say compared to "Slaxby's", but at least it is never unpleasant
to be at Chick-fil-A...

Along similar line. The micky d I frequent is added on to a handi mart with the bathroom facilities in the handi mart and some of the micky d tables look towards the hall from the bathroom. I'm enjoying my caffeine one Sunday morning before Church and I see this young man coming out of the bathroom in a micky d uniform and has his hand inside his pants adjusting the boyz when he walks back into the serving cooking area of micky Ds-nother words Behind the counter. I was outa my seat and the manager was right there and in my own subtle style I informed her on What I had just seen. She did git hold of him before he handled any food and when he headed back to the bathroom she thanked me cuz the boy wuz cookin that morning!  Lips Sealed They wear rubber gloves BUT. The but being did he handle my food PROPERLY?   Undecided  RIDE SAFE.

side step to  any business serving the public and you will look at the other side of this picture.  Even when a customer puts in a special order, you have it in writing, with their signature, and you produce it and they still complain it is not what they ordered, you begin to see our society is full of rude, self seeking individuals who have no business out in the world without a sitter watching over them.  It's a tuff room to play when there are people who just live to be obnoxious.  I can be rude or pleasant. It basically boils down to who I want to be. It really is driven by what we are dealing with day to day and minute to minute sometimes.  I admire those people who can be pleasant even when everyone else is being a jerk.  Today, I'm cranky, and so far,  well, never mind. I might say something I don't need to......  crazy2

It really depends upon whether the question comes from behind the counter or at the table.  Servers in many, if not most, eating establishments these days are paid considering expected tips in the wages.  If you don't tip, they worked for free.  Entitled? I have little respect for folks who will not tip their server.

At my local McD's it seems they put their first stringers at the drive-through windows and the deer-in-the-headlights workers at the front counter.  Drive through service is actually quite good.  I think part of it is that there is a high percentage of Asian immigrants around here, and parents have high expectations of their kids.

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but in Alberta all the McDonalds have gone to a system where (when ordering inside) you use a touch screen to configure your order, then wait for your number to come up to receive your food.  They have only one person at the till for people like me who refuse to navigate their system.  Since they implemented this, the time to actually get your food has stretched out significantly, and often the food is lukewarm when you get it.  If I want to eat in, I'd now rather go to Wendy's or A&W because the food is fast and hot.

They wear rubber gloves BUT.

They use the gloves to protect their hands from the nasty food they're making for us

I went to McDonald's while on a Christmas road trip, and ordered an egg MacMuffin...
it was the middle of the day, but they serve them all day now. They didn't have one
ready, so I got to stand there for a few minutes. I could see back into where the
"cook" was working. He had giant dredlocks, and, in between working on the
different orders, he'd dig way down deep into his dredlocks to scratch his scalp with his
mayonaise covered gloves. And then keep right on working on people's food. I tossed
my egg MacMuffin into the trash as I left...

I think most of you are pretty harsh on fast food employees, just IMO.

I know I would not want to work in retail or the food industry, am sure at times can be high pressure or stressful for some.

Yah,  common sense may be lacking, but getting paid minimum wage or slightly above that is hard to make a go of it.

My daughter worked her first REAL job age 16 and 17 at a young female clothing store as a customer service/cashier, etc. employee with only 2 people working in small store.  She was continually being asked by the one lady in charge to UPSELL and BUG the retail customers asking and asking if they wanted help or suggesting sale items to them, etc.  That was NOT her style but readily available to find other sizes in back for customers or nearby if needing help and having to clean the bathroom or put up store flyers in windows, etc.  She never missed a day of work in over 1 year there, never late,  and was making like minimum wage of 7.50 or so per hour is all.  After 1 year,  she never, AS PROMISED,  when first hired got an employee written sit down evaluation/review just comments in verbal about what to do or not do is all.  Well, after near 1 1/2 years there NO raise off mininum wage barely worth the gas of our family car to drive there 14  miles one way to work 4-5 hours after school, she asked for an immediate sit down review as well as a raise off mininum wage.  They told her since she started mid-year, that it will have to wait another 5-6 months for her first raise near 2 full years.  We told her to QUIT (another thing happened which pissed us all off) which she wanted to anyways was not worth it, and she did giving her 2 week notice the next day.   Not only that, but she found out that an OLDER age 18 girl (she was 17 at the time her first real job) who started 4-5 months AFTER she started was making 50 cents per hour MORE than her off minimum wage simply because she has a few months of retail experience at Wal Mart next door.  That really pissed her off as well.   Retail and fast food employment am sure in most scenarios are not all they are cracked up to be.

So, my point is do not be too critical of some of our younger working adults since no one knows the shoes they are walking in.    Then again,  I have worked with for years early to mid 20s females in an office setting and most are either lazy or think they know it all changing the world the way THEY think it should be or they want BIG bucks right off the get go.

Willow, I totally agree with you! If I am served at a table, then I wholeheartedly tip the server (unless the service is horrible). On the contrary, of the last 10 years or so, it seems that almost every establishment you step into has a tip jar on the counter. It is my opinion that just because you stand behind said counter, does not entitle you to a tip. Many of these workers feel their pay is low and they should get a tip for performing nothing more than standing there and giving me a bag of fries etc.

You guys still have A&W's up there ? They've all seemed to close up around here. When I was a kid we had one in Anchorage that was owned by a Lions Club member. He had cages behind the store with a couple lions.

Do they still exist?

During my SoCal USAF service, I started seeing a bumper sticker all over the place that said In 'n Out urge.  It was funny and I just attributed it to SoCal wackiness;  had no idea it was just creative cutting on a local burger joint bumper sticker.  Until I actually rode by one.
