Say What You mean Mean What You Say

Rockyview County, Alberta 2001 Interstate

« on: April 20, 2017, 08:12:55 AM »

I would like to replace my cut down (12.5") stock windshield...I cut it down because the chrome fuel filler was reflecting off the shield...bad design...I do like looking over the shield, but am getting a lot of wind buffeting now.
Just wondering if other shields might eliminate the reflection issue.

http://www.bigbikeparts.com/templates/product.aspx?ProductGuid=20-510&GroupGuid=282

User opinions on this shield ...as well as opinions on alternative shields.
Thanks

That is why the OEM is maybe good (polycarbonate)...other than the fuel filler reflection. You can't break polycarbonate.

I have this windshield and have no issues with glare or reflection. It is wider and taller than stock which I like. I use Honda Polish to keep it clean - it will scratch if your not careful with it. Overall, I am happy with it...

That Show Chrome is a decent shield, but 2.5" over stock, so 18" total, and 5.5" higher than you have on your bike now.  At 5'9" (with long body and short legs) I would have to come out of my seat to look over it on either my Bigboy or Lowboy seats.

My Clearview replacement shields are 15.5" (stock height) on my Bigboy seat bike, and 14.4" on my Lowboy seat bike (both perfect for me to easily look over or slouch behind).

The Show Chrome is also 4" wider on each side (8" total), which is OK but maybe a bit of overkill.  Both my Clearviews are 2.5" wider on each side.  (5" total, wider than stock)

I wear only DOT half helmets year round.

My advice is to first decide how high you want your replacement shield, then go to whoever will make you one that height, and to go a bit wider (but not 8" wider).

If you want the best polycarb go with F4 Customs.  They offer 4 sizes, and I do not know if they will cut one to your specs, if you want different from what they offer.  This site also has a nice video on IS shield replacement.   https://f4customs.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_13

Or go to Clearview and get their Lucite shield at 5" wider than stock, cut to your height specification.  The lucite is top quality, very clear and about twice the thickness of polycarb (like the OE shield).  Small dings can be polished out of Lucite, not polycarb (though less likely to ding).  https://www.clearviewshields.com/motorcycle-windshield/honda/valkyrie-interstate-shields/

I have a tank bib (w pouch) on one bike which covers the gas cap and removes the glare.  I also wear polarized lenses in my riding glasses and this cuts down on that glare pretty well on the other bike with no bib.  At my height, the gas cap glare on that bike only happens when the sun angle and my riding position is just right: most of the time not an issue.

If you don't like a bib (I don't, but I love my pouch on trips), I think the cap could come off and go to the powder coater for a non glare finish pretty cheaply.  I had my interstate anodized aluminum idiot light trim bezel powder coated black because all the clear coat came off and looked like crap, and it shined in my eyes too.  That thing is paper thin and took very delicate work to get off without crinkling/bending it.

Also, I think that glare from a poly carb shield is a bit worse than on a Lucite (plastic) shield.

All good info everybody...now I have to sort out which one??
Problem here is that many of these dealers charge an arm and leg for shipping to the "Great White North" so I have to collect up a bunch of USA based items between friends and family and have it all shipped to the Montana Shipping Outlet in Ureka MT.  I have family in Fernie BC so it turns into a visit and bling run at the same time.

What is that hard coating that chips off on the OEM shield for the std. Valk?
Took me four hours to get it off and then re-polish it.
I also cut an 1.5" off of it at a later time, so I don't have to look through it...

Get a Clearview stock height replacement. Then tilt your shield back by moving the bottom mounts forward a bit. It reduces buffeting and stops the glare. Search for past threads on tilted shields. I posted a pic several times on this. Not currently on my home PC.

I will have a look at that...I did that with my Stratoliner and it did help with the meter reflecting off the shield at night...very annoying...someone was selling a leather hood for the meter to solve the issue....don't these guys ride them before putting them in the showrooms???

Fiddling shield angle is one thing with a non-fairing bike, it's another with an interstate.

Smiley thought maybe I'd been missing some magic tricks for the last 4 years. I have the Show Chrome. I cut it from eyeball. 14" from the garnish. A little wind, but if you really don't like wind I don't know why anybody would ride. As long as I don't get blurry vision from buffeting, I like the wind.

But you wear a full face, don't you?  (yes the screen can still be open)

I didn't mention cutting in my above post.  It can always be done, but I kind of figure if you need a new one, why not get it the right height to begin with?

Hey Lyle how ya doin... I've checked out both of those...the tank bib with the cap cover  would do the job for sure. Fortnine for the shield is a good deal.

I spoke with Clearview about my shield a few weeks ago. He asked about tinting, claiming that it helps a great deal with glare......

This guy in St Augustine, FL can custom make you anything that you want.

He's very reasonable and will only charge you actual cost for shipping.

https://bikescreen.com

Also, if you want a shorter shield so that you can look over it, he can do a Euro Flip that reduces the buffeting.
