Keep the shiny side up

Sioux Falls South Dakota

« on: April 21, 2017, 07:58:22 AM »

So Monday went running errands, left Walmart and went up a slight hill. Not paying attention must've started off in second gear and yep you guessed it bike stalled and I was in the middle of the turn laid her down. Flipped her off Grin waved to the car behind me to let them know I'm ok just alittle  uglystupid2
Got her back up restarted her and drove off. Well good news no scratches on the new paint. All guards did their job. Cheesy bad news is I strained my lower back. Tied at work lifted big garage bin and the as I was lowering that I heard a pop. Went home put heat on it went to work Wednesday. Could not bend over for anything so went to doc on Thursday and got meds and more meds. Back feels better but since I had to miss three days of work my wife won't let me do anything. Not even an oil change on the bike.  :'(anyways hope everyone else is ok and enjoying their weekend. You will find me in a lounge chair watching the world pass me by.  cooldude

Similar issues. Chiropractor care and acupuncture was doing well. Pinched nerve. Went to a pain clinic that specialized in spines. On a scale of 1 to 10 , my pain hit a 25. I told them I wish I could just pass out. First go round , 4 injections , 2 right ,2 left . Second go round, two right. the third was yesterday and only the right. He told me I would feel pressure in the leg , and I did. I was laying on my stomach and had a strap holding me down and on the table. I opted to do this with out sedation.
Very uncomfortable , but tolerable for me. Everyone is different. In this clinic , only about one in twenty five go without sedation.  My injury went to the extreme where I could not ride the bike.
Went to a recommended spine specialist who spoke simple to understand terms. His diagnosis , "Your back is junk, a couple blown discs and also (drum roll) he recommended a visit to a hip Dr. for evaluation. I guess I need a hip . Anterior replacement. Shots first so I can ride to IZ 17.

Worth taking a look at.

When the fat lady wants to take a nap let her down gently if you can. Don't try to hold her up. Sprained wrist, tendons, elbows etc.

She will settle nicely on the engine guard.

Never be shy of getting help to lift her back up.

Old age,and old body parts suck.

I've some chronic low back issues (not as bad as you guys), but if I refrain from doing stupid things, I do pretty well.  Better the last few years of retirement-laziness, than many years before.

The problem is, I am physically able (besides the back) and strong enough to do many things that I just should not be doing anymore.  I mean, it might go fine, or I might be laid up with a bad back for a week or 10.

So I have to stick a work/activity governor in my brain.  This works pretty well for anything heavy (as long as I remember), but the thing that will bite my ass, is the entirely no-load activity of bending over to pick something up (like a twig or a screwdriver).  If I go at it crooked, and do any twisting at the same time I am bending down, it can be as bad as power lifting some stupid heavy weight.  And this is harder to remember, as you go about your day.   I have to think about using footwork to get lined up straight on my object to pick up, and now often go down to my knees (which are great) to pick things up.  And I try to remember to use my back support belts anytime I will spend the day outside doing about any activity, heavy or light (even when my back is fine).  Not only does it provide support and heat, but it's mere presence and constriction serves as a constant reminder to use good technique in all activities.

The old.... work smarter and not harder is my mantra.

His diagnosis , "Your back is junk, a couple blown discs and also (drum roll) he recommended a visit to a hip Dr. for evaluation. I guess I need a hip . Anterior replacement.

See, this is why I don't go to doctors.  I mean they are always making with the negative waves (Kelly's Heros) and giving you bad news and telling you what not to do and eat, violating your personal space (and holes) and occasionally wanting to cut on you.  Where is the fun in any of that?

Backing out of garage bay, I laid mine down on the left side.  Only part that hit was the highway peg, which was folded up.  Did not use the technique shown above.  Was able to get the bike back up, but it was not easy.  I was too embarrassed one of my neighbors would see me.  There is a youtube video of a guy showing the same method as the one above only using a Harley.  Next time, I will know better.

Backing up to the bike to lift it is fine if the kickstand is deployed out on the other side to catch it if it goes over the other way.  Not so great if the kickstand is on your lifting side.  Yeah, if you have a spotter or helper, it's all good.

I can and have lifted my bikes facing them every time.  I get the bars turned to the lock to the low side and use the low side handlebar, my hip against the bike and grab the rear guard (or bag rail).  It helps that interstates are held up fore and aft on the guards, and not all the way over flat.  I don't think I could lift it from flat, alone.  Bike in gear, so it's not trying to roll backwards on you.  This does put a lot of torque on your bar risers, but mine have held up fine.

I also have to approach it as a power lift with a big burst of energy and determination.  If I go at it gradually, it ain't coming up.  Good footing is essential.

Then, reset the tip over switch.

A few years ago getting off work, I came out geared up and was sitting on the bike when I felt my phone vibrate. Took it out to read the text. Couldn't without my reading glasses. Somewhere in all of that I evidently started leaning to the left. By the time I realized it, it was too late. I couldn't keep it from going over. Lifting your bike up in front of 20 Snowbirds all giving their advice on how to do it can be very humbling. I'm just glad none of my coworkers witnessed it.

While I have never dropped one of the Ladies, I did drop an 1800 VTX which actually outweighs our Big Girls. In a parking lot at slow speed and lots of wet leaves  all around. You would have thought it was ice as slick as the pavement was. I had to clear leaves away from my feet just to get a decent stance to lift that monster.

As far as the back goes, I am not a fan of meds. All they do is block the pain and then we go out and repeat stupid moves before the healing is complete. (Or at least I will.) PT, Chiro, acupuncture, massage, or other before a single pill passes my lips. And I have 3 fused vertebrae in the lower back as a result of an injury when in my 20's so I know what back pain can be. Ice first 24 -48 hours. Then ice and heat alternate for next 24 -48. Shouldn't use heat immediately,  increases inflammation.  Thank you, that will be $500.00...glad that's all you did, coulda been worse.  Take care.
