These guys know how to live off the land in a very unforgiving place. I lived in Nome and Kotzebue for a year when I was young. I tried most of the traditional foods. You've got to be pretty hungry or tough to eat "stink head" or seal oil in my opinion. I'll never forget the first time one of my workers walked over to the grinder as I was making ground beef. He reached in, grabbed a handful of raw ground beef and just munched it down like it was popcorn.

I loved the story! Would love to try some of the stuff. I'm from Hawaii and when I was a kid we ate some stuff that the mainland folks would have some problems with. Raw fish, seaweed, poi, and stuff. I'd draw the line at fish eyes though. That would just be creepy.

Worked as a butcher for nearly 30 years. Did some slaughtering and retail stuff. Some of the raw meats, when fresh, are delicious.

MMmmmm good eats!

Sounds really appetizing, guys... However, I think I'll stick with pork chops, smashed taters, and cornbread... sweet tea, too, of course...

I'm with you up to the tea. Unsweetened for me.  cooldude My MIL is originally a poor country girl from Missouri. She makes the most delicious fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, gravy, cornbread, for me whenever I ask her.

I pride myself on having tried many local foods around the world. But most of them are never to be tried again.  Smiley

I cannot eat food that stinks (or is still wiggling).
