I was just watching the News on TV, they had a segment and were getting pumped up for the Woodward Cruise. They were showing some of the upcoming activities, one of them concerned smoking the tires. I have been a street rod /street machine/ bike builder all my life, and for the life of me I can’t understand the fascination of smoking your tires. Although they don’t give tires away, but I think about the abuse of the vehicle itself. I see all that work, and people just beating the snot out of their toy. I just don’t get it, I have been to shows, and the smell makes me sick also. What is the deal, I am missing something.

I don't really understand it myself. I've spent a lot of time figuring out how to get a vehicle to hook up so as to not smoke the tires.
I don't have much of a problem if someone wants to light them up after a local car show, but, when they want to just sit there and let them burn until the air falls out I just don't care for.

Seen similar things with my Brother up in Illinois at various car shows and have wondered the same cursed thing. You pour all that money time and effort into the machine and then go and Abuse the kaka out of it!  And I also realize it Is Their machine. Nice too have all that power but what ever venue I'm racing I wanna go Fast and most of all-WIN!  If I blow the sumbitch up racin that's one thing BUT if I blow the sumbitch up bein stoopid-WHY on Earth spend THAT much money bein stoopid when ya can git a cheap beater and be stoopid fer a Lot less money!  STILL enjoy demo derbys though it's been years since I participated.  RIDE SAFE. |

Kinda goes along with a burn out pit at a bike rally. Why do you want to treat a bike like that? Guess I'm just a spoil sport but most of us like our bikes and take great pains to take care of them.

Do you also wonder why drag cars smoke their tires before a run? I'm pretty sure this is where it came from. I have been known to smoke a few in my life (tires) it's fun, then you old geezers come around and ruin it for everyone  ( it was a joke, I happen to like you old geezers) |

The drag cars have a function, they smoke them to warm up the tires for the best traction. When they go green and come out of the hole, they are like a sling shot.

The annual mid winter camping trip "The Cold Kiwi" has a burnout section.... gets a bit boring through it but you see some near new bikes role up and destroy a tire....some keep going after it pops and take the tire down to the rim....they end up with broken tail lights, torn guards and cords wrapped around the axle/brakes...... and they still have to ride it home! They do have a tire outfit there to fit old tires for you to burnout but I still think what a waist of a good bike... https://youtu.be/ogomNAZ81FwThe fastest burnout to pop was an R1 strait up through the gears to 299 kph....didn't last long but took him ages with side cutters to remove all the cords from the tire..... he reckoned never again but we will see if he does it again this year....has said that before |

Reminds me of people who take a $30-40,000 dollar truck and drive it into a mud bog. It must be a lot of fun!

30-40k? Those are the junk mud trucks. I know of 3 guys that have over 130k in their trucks. Stupid yes, but it is alot of fun  |

You are Right, it is your toy and you can do what you want with it. Maybe that is the difference between people that actually builds their toys, and the ones that just buys their toy and have tools for show. Although, I have been to some shows were people have built vehicles just for smoking their tires, that's different. But in the end it is all your choice, also some people have more dollars than sense.
