Hello everyone....

New member signing in from (the People's Republic of) Connecticut!  Been riding a 1985 GL1200A for eight years or so - no road trips, basically a daily commuter.  However, if all goes well, I will become a Valkyrie rider before the end of the month.  Put a deposit down on a black 1999 Valkyrie Standard with less than 4900 miles on it.    Unfortunately, it was not running right - suspect dirty carbs.  Hopefully, it should be back together soon so I can give it a test ride. 

It comes equipped with these lunch box-sized leather bags.  I'll have to replace them, preferably with some used Tourer or Interstate versions.  Will also need a windscreen.  Eventually, I plan to put a fairing on it.  Any recommendations for any of these would be much appreciated.

IMHO, you're heading in the right direction looking for OEM.

Honda makes the best screen and hardbags for the Valk.

The problem is the cost, you can expect to pay up $500.00 for a complete screen and $1000.00 - $1500.0 0 for a set of bags and frames.

I have only OEM bags so I can't speak to aftermarket, but, there are some good aftermarket bags. 

I have a SwitchBlade on my Bobber and it's a nice quality small screen.

I also have a Clearview replacement screen that uses the OEM Tourer hardware.

Look on E-bay and search through the classifieds here and you'll find many used options for sale.

Welcome. The Valkyrie is addictive. This used to be a standard.  A friend who can no longer ride built this.  It has Mustang Bags, Harley Trunk and Woody's Fairing.  Lots of other stuff too, you will never be done once you start.

Welcome, as you'll discover tourer hard bags and windshield can be expensive and sometimes hard to come by but there are lots of other options.

The bags are out there. Try to find some that match your paint, but painting black all over won't be the most expensive endeavor. Memphis Shades has a reasonable screen and hardware, and in my opinion performs better than OEM.

A friend of mine left oem hardware and a shield (have not looked to see if it is a hondaline Shield  or clearview....) at my place to sell for him. He wants $350.00 plus shipping if you are interested.  cooldude

It's official...was able to test ride yesterday, picked her up today....Wow!  What a ride! 

Still have some work to do...need to do some steel wool on some rust.  The threads on the throttle cable are pretty nasty - those may be replacement candidates for next season. 

The PO put running boards and a heel/toe shift kit on.  Unfortunately, the heel-toe was sized for about a 10.5 shoe, not my size 12.  The running boards are really comfortable, but they are not positioned for comfortable shifting and brake operation. 

No owner's manual, found a 1997 on-line.  On the plus side, I have the tool kit.

Today was a good day...

Do you find that the heel portion of shifter is almost in the way with the kickstand extension? Or does it grab your pant leg when backing? Any name on boards?

On your rust/pitting, Big Lots and others too sell a box of steel wool pads with soap in them for a dollar.  They work really well for those type of problems.

What part of CT you hale from?

The cable ends are a pain if you have the ones that like to rust.  I've sanded them down and painted them.  Tedious, but worked.

Jeffs (Chirsj CMA) black Valk is a great example of what a Standard can look like. cooldude

There are peg lowering kits that come up for sale every once and a while on eBay or the classifieds.

Do a search and you might find some still available.

I run with heal toe & floor boards and wouldn't do different, does take some getting used too.

oldsmokey...This heel/toe was too small.  Test rode some Victory's  with heel/toes a couple of years ago that fit me better.  Not sure what you mean by 'Name on boards?'

Here's a picture of when I went to test ride her (and also to test my ability to post from Google pictures).

Also found some bare spots on the frame...any recommendations on what type of touch up paint/primer  I should use?

Not the best fix but apparently they don't want you to use the url for an img link.  I changed it to a url type so at least someone can click on it and see it.

Looks like a few bolts also have rust on them and you're missing a swingarm cover (round piece) with the picture you posted.  All easily replaced.  Seems like a lot of rust on the throttle cable area, just as you mentioned.  However, this is a 19 year old bike that may have been stored outside, not in a garage, for a time.

I can't figure out how you would have bare spots on the frame.  Do these look like welded areas that could have been repairs to the frame?  I've never seen such spots on any Valks .

The front tire is a Dunlop Elite 3.  With only 4900 miles, make sure these are less than 6 years old.  I don't think they are the OEM tires, but I could be wrong.

I believe those are M/C made boards that were combined with the toe Heel. (Couldn't view left side) I have a set picked up used and am trying to work with. Just bought lowering kit from MarkT still not installed. I might shorten the heel portion by half so my boot fits on board better and doesn't interfere with pedaling backwards and deploying kick stand. May also possibly trim toe portion by a quarter. I believe the majority of boards in use are Cobra or Kuryakan.
