My company, Adams Company, LLC was involved in a new reality television show due to air on 8/12/17, the A&E channel/ FYI network at 9:30 EST, check out the trailer for "You Can't Turn That Into A House" : https://www.facebook.com/FYI/videos/vb.334832696659288/965389186936966/?type=2&theaterIt was a really fun experience, a lot of hard work and I learned that the world of television is a lot different from my world in construction. I hope you can catch it! TxDeb

Looks pretty cool. Wondered about doing something like that up in Alabama for hunting purposes but don't have the skills for it.

Buddy of mines daughter saw some such show and now wants to convert some shipping containers into a home. Problem is , in my nanny state, you'd have to do some serious discussion with the building dept. before they'd issue a permit. Especially in the Energy Code areas. I watched the trailer on Facebook and it's looks cool, like they did several different types. Just don't think that will float in this neck of the woods. Great imagination going on there.

I doubt that would pass any heat loss calculations up here where freezing might be the high during a month. To be honest, I doubt living in a metal structure would be very enjoyable once the sun is up and the temps above 85*. It might be fun to see what one can make of containers, old silos and such but selling to John Q Public might be a challenge.

Converted shipping containers are very buildable. With a proper air flow roof and insulated , they are great. I have seen some with siding. I converted several into garages and construction offices. I want to get one large on up north for my shop. Congrats Deb , will pion the program.

Am internet friend of my wife has a steel building for a home / garage. If you can make a steel building into a comfortable home, why not one of these ?

They do. I read an article a while back of them refurbishing them for the villages in AK.

As a Chief Building Official in northern Ontario, Canada and former owner of a construction company I love stuff like this. It definitely takes some effort to comply with the Building codes and an open minded Building Official helps but it can be done. I read about a hotel that was recently constructed entirely out of shipping containers.

Have considered (for several years) turning an old grain storage elevator into a living space and then using shipping containers for a garage, storage and shop area. It can be done.
I have a friend who built a shipping container home from four or five of the big ones. It's actually pretty cool.

Price on shipping containers vary widely. There go from food safe to illegal immigrant storage. (joke). I would ask for watertight containers for the office conversions and get lower quality on ones for work site lock ups. I have installed up to four garage doors in one 48 footer. I picked the doors up from the big box lumber(?) yards for around $180.00. Basic doors , but they worked fine.

Rams, If you are really interested, this group looks for projects to keep the show going. I finally watched the episode that aired last night and the two other previous weeks on the computer. I hope my episode comes out well. Next Saturday 8/12 at 8:30 pm CST. Catch it if you can.
