HAV's "seeing" non-HAV cars /trucks - shouldn't be a big deal.

seeing motorcycles / scooters / bicycles / pedestrians - I'm  not so sure. As one of the articles stated - it may come down to everything else needing to have an active or passive transponder - I'm not sure we're ready to go there. A "nonactive" transponder would be even better - if you could place a couple of these passive transponders on a motorcycle in strategic places - it wouldn't be so bad.

However - until there is a mandate on something to make everything work together - I think the HAV feature should be disabled.  It would be even better if the feature will be allowed to turn on / auto turn off by sensors on the roads.

I've got no expertise in this kind of electronics or any electronic for that matter. That said, maybe an RF  thing in the plate tags of all registered vehicles. All of the driverless vehicles will emit a signal triggering the device in the plate tag. Like a transponder that was mentioned. The cost would be born, at least initially, by the companies producing these vehicles.

Why does it seem the more technologically advance we become the lazier we get. I say ban this program and be more strict to the people who aren't paying attention to driving. Cell phones killed enough people cause others using them don't pay attention. Now all of a sudden we need cars that drive themselves. Why? I won't ever buy one. People should always be in control of a motor vehicle.

remember this is all happening because of the huge taxpayer grants given out by the Clinton administration.  WHY?

they have been pushing that ALL vehicles will be tracked, where one goes, for how long, etc. This is deep in the UN agendas. I was reading about this in the '90s. Now all motor vehicles recently built have a blackbox.  insurance companies using it to lower your cost is one ploy. there are others coming, paying for road tolls, which haven't been toll roads ever.

Part of the reason for tracking cars is (SURPRISE !) the collection of taxes (especially on EVs).  Now, if the state Gov would just use the taxes collected for their stated purpose - transportation !!!

oregon is first state to track its citizens

Note that was in 2015,  haven't heard much about it since it first started.  They asked for volunteers to test the system.  It was suppose to be a one year test run.  Not sure how it would work with EV's

Speaking of EV's, Gov'er just signed new legislation that raises our gas tax and sets aside money for giving it to folks who buy EV's.  Now that makes since.  Give our gas tax money to folks who drive EV's instead of using it for transportation infrastructure.  EV's don't pay into the transportation account.   Yeah the state congress and Gov'er are Dem's

IIRC, a couple months ago on AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) magazine they had an interview with one engineer/manager at Waymo (i.e. the spin off google self driving car company).

He is a motorcycle rider and said that they are developing the system factoring the presence of motorcycles, not requiring the presence of sensors in the bikes.

I don't know about other companies/systems if they are doing the same.

I found the interview at Waymo's website: https://medium.com/waymo/keeping-motorcyclists-safe-c40f3bb2f2d0

A quote: "How do you think Google’s self-driving cars help make your ride safer?
Christian: For a motorcyclist, the biggest issue is visibility. I’ve lost count of the number of times that a driver hasn’t seen me coming on my bike, or has made a turn in front of me without first looking. Our self-driving cars don’t get distracted and can see 360 degrees, two football fields away. Humans also have more difficulty seeing smaller things — like bikes — when there is less light. But thanks to our suite of sensors, our cars are just as capable of seeing motorcycles in the pitch dark as in full sunlight."

I can confirm that the behavior of google's self driving car changes when a motorcycle approaches it (when last year I was riding in Mountain View - CA and came really close to one of those cars, it slowed down and made more room for me to lane split).

I'd be all over the self driving car if I was one of those people who
had to grind  back and forth two hours each way to work in Atlanta
(or wherever).

And I'd trust the computer in a Casio watch to be a better driver
than a whole bunch of the mouth-breathers that I see out there
every day...
