This coming Monday marks 6 months since I was promoted to Buildings Landscape Supervisor.....I have 4 crews consisting of a Crewleader, Groundskeeper, and two state inmates.....I'm responsible for around a 100 properties/streets.....I have an office and my own work truck and am supposed to be out in the field around 75% of the time....office the other 25%...actually more like 50/50 until I learn all the "inside" stuff.....it's not all that hard, but is a little bit of a challenge......I was on "cruise control" as a Crewleader and was just coasting along.......The Good, I got to hire two really good Crewleaders(one was my former GK).....have a GK that needs some more training...we're working on getting her up to speed....and had another GK dumped on me from the ROW cost center that is a real PIA due to federal laws.......that is my biggest headache.......but hopefully it will be resolved in the future.....overall, I've got a good solid group of guys and gals......one has been out on a long medical leave, but may be coming back to work soon.....3 different guys have had or will have new kids born very soon.... I have gone out and trained each crew several times in areas they aren't that experienced in such as tree removals using bucket trucks/lifts and using grapple claws on a Bobcat etc....I just put my old work clothes on and grab chaps, a saw, safety gear and sweat along with them......what's unprecedented is that now, at the end of each day, we rarely ever leave at quitting time which is 3:30pm....these guys stay and BS with each other and me until almost 4pm sometimes.....for the last 21 years, EVERYONE was standing on top of each other to clock out.......not sure what that says??....... ???

If you go into a restaurant and the place is dirty and the workers are lax, its really not them but the manager is to blame, so it goes on the good side also.

It is not so much a job anymore, but more of a family setting. Somewhere you enjoy to go to and work/chat/play with the people you work with.

maybe they stay 30 minutes later til 4 p.m. to get 30 minutes overtime on the clock ???? money is not everything, but a good group of people is more important to work with which means a TON MORE.

my best bosses had no limits. I've had plenty that wouldn't do anything "below his pay grade" Stanley, I'm really glad things have taken a good turn at work. It doesn't seem that long ago you were contemplating leaving. I think you made the right decision. Are you still able to keep the side job ?

Our old landscape manager retired suddenly last July... my old boss got his job...she had been promoted to basically assistant mgr...he had promoted another woman to fill the Building Supervisor job I have now...but that Lady got the assistant mgr job...when Rita got the top job,so I was then promoted to the job I have now....everyone has been happier since our old manager retired a year ago.... And yes, I still have my small tractor business on the side, but I can pick and choose what jobs I want to do since I don't really have to make any money to pay for my tractor...all my cars, trucks, motorcycle, house, credit card bills are paid off...and I got a good raise to boot...I still make more than my "new boss" who is the assistant manager
