Famous tiger and bear say goodbye to their beloved lion 'brother' after 15 years

Leo the lion, the big cat who stole hearts around the world sadly passed away last year. Leo was a part of a famous trio of unlikely animal friends, known as the BLT. Baloo the bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the Tiger became best friends after they were rescued as cubs from a drug dealer's house in 2001.
The animals had been living in deplorable conditions and were found clinging to each other for comfort. Much to the surprise of rescuers, the group remained inseparable for 15 years, even sharing an enclosure.

Sadly, Leo's health began deteriorating last summer and exploratory surgery was planned.

"During the procedure, our veterinarians discovered that over 80% of Leo's liver was full of inoperable masses and because of this, the heart wrenching decision was made to let him go," a Noah's Ark official wrote on August 11.

Shere Khan and Baloo were given the opportunity to say their final goodbyes to their best buddy.

"It is highly likely that Baloo and Shere Khan knew their lion brother was terminally ill long before Leo began displaying outward symptoms," the Noah's Ark spokesperson explained on Facebook.

Noah's Ark also held a special celebration of life ceremony in honor of the gentle lion.

That's true, you just have to respect each other's differences.  Unfortunately some humans haven't figured out how to do that yet.

I've followed those guys for a few years now. It was really very sad when Leo passed on. You wonder what goes through the mind of an animal. I suspect they're much more aware than many give them credit for.

Great story, except the drug dealer treatment part.

Was Leo a neutered male?  No mane.

The survivors would be well suited with many of their kind in Keenesburg, Colorado.
It is a unique environment for the animals and a unique experience for humans.

Yours was a fine story about a sanctuary that truly cares about it's residents; it is obvious from their housing and the history of the caretakers.

Sorry Bill  Embarrassed I just couldn't resist.  2funny it is a pretty cool story. I'm curious how the drug dealer was able to get ahold of baby bear, lion, and tiger ? Seems like some unscrupulous zoo or something needs to be investigated.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh No!

Very cool story!  cooldude

The last time that I was working in Tazewell I learned that there is someone running a Lion rescue in the area.

I intend to check that out when I get a chance.

An additional story if anyone near Denver wishes to visit; nowhere else like it in the country...scout's honor.  Children are captivated when they get out in the vast expanse of the area and see these animals roaming free of cages and being themselves.

Hope this doesn't qualify as a stolen thread; not meant to be.

south of Eureka Springs Arkansas is a large carnivore rescue place--pretty impressive how they run it--Walmart supplies all their meat for free--they are caged but they have a pair of people(at all times) move them around quite a bit...one person will turn their back and bend over like a grazing animal near a fence and the lions, tigers and bears will stalk them...pretty interesting to watch--some of those animals are just so big and powerful!!
