Hmmm... You bearly made it away? Was it's breath unbearable? Could you not bear to think of what might happen to you if it attacked? Did you just stop to get your bearings when it moved in on you? Was it right on the other side of the bearicade? Could you hear it growl in it's bearitone voice?

Rode into Yellowstone in 1966 on a Harley Sportser. We got within six feet of bears begging for food while waiting for traffic. That was much closer than I wanted to be. We could only use our exhaust note to drive them back a bit. Just glad I did not smell sweet...

If he's close enough, poke him in the eye.
That way, when he comes back at you, you can beat him with your stump.

I didn't need to guess how close I was to this guy last week, we see bears and encounter them quite a bit here in So. west Va. here he's coming around the front porch.. Good size black bear.. Pretty close right here... Decided it was time to run him off, fired a shot from a .45 and he disappeared in a blink of an eye..

Damn Don.......That is a bit close if you were having a BBQ.....I had thought about camping out at your place next time I was up that away - think I would have to get a room - at least camp out in your shop I remember LD posting one time about paw prints at your house and stuff - but DANG! When I use to live in Morristown, Tennessee and folks would visit, we always took them through the Smokey Mountains and when traffic came to a standstill, we knew that the bears were out in a rubbish can or something. Tourists in their little shorts, safari hats, camera hanging from their necks and Hawaii shirts would be out of the car and the husband would be telling the wife, "Here Martha, take this candy bar and go up and see if the bear will take it from you so I can get a picture. Just see if he will eat it out of your hand........." Eat it out of your hand - they will EAT YOUR HAND. HB, gotta admit, that is a pretty bear though................

Riding down the west side of Brasstown Bald to where the decline flattens out.
In my periphery I see a flash of movement erupt from the close trees.
I turn my head to focus on the movement.
A black bear powers up the short slope towards the road.
As startled as I am he changes direction to run parallel with me.
I could have touched him with my right foot if I had stretched my leg out.
One or two heartbeats and he's barreled back into tree cover.

I've stood at the overlook on Deals Gap and saw a bear headed uphill cross the road.
I've seen a bear cross the BRP between Coot and Steamers bikes.
I've seen numerous bears cross forest roads when I used to go exploring on my KLR.
This encounter was so brief I don't even have a good image locked into my brain.

Only time I've seen one on the wild, I was 15 on a mega-trip with my dad (In our 1984 Toyota pickup). We were somewhere around Dawson Creek, BC, rural 2 lane road, and I swear to you there was a bear sitting on the side of the road waving at us.
We both looked at each other with a "PLEASE tell me you saw that too and I'm not losing it?!?!" look... Unfortunately, by the time I got my 35MM SLR out we had passed it (And we weren't crazy enough to stop for it either.)
