Hey guys--I have an older Ultimate Seat with backrest that I have repaired a couple of times with JB Weld where the latch catches the locking mechanism.  This seat was on the bike when I bought it so I don't know if I cracked the plastic pan where the latch is attached, or if it was like that when I acquired.  At any rate, I can not get it to latch after the second "repair" and actually used it like that for a month or so, but bit the bullet and bought a new Ultimate Big Boy to replace it.  Problem is, the backrest does not work the same.  Ultimate has changed the design.  I tried to buy just the bracket so I could use the old backrest, but Ultimate will not sell to me.

I am hoping, and here is the "help" part, that someone can take a couple photos of their backrest and maybe I can fab up something to use my old backrest pad.  If not, I will either do without or buy the new style backrest for $225 plus shipping.

TIA.

Is Des still owner of Ultimate Seats? If he is, I can not imagine that he would not be willing to accommodate your need. I want go into a long story with details but I approached him with a problem I was having with my seat while in Daytona at the Sunrise Mall and he gave me a new seat on the spot. Granted, it was in the early years of his business and maybe he was trying "harder" back then. I think maybe if you talk to the right person at Ultimate you can solve you issue.

John,
Most likely he recognized you as the VIP you are.
When I walk by they hold up signs that say keep moving..........  the restroom is that way.  Wink

Given their reputation I wouldn't take NO for an answer until I heard it directly from Des himself.

Actually, I did get a reply from Des.  His response was not that he would not sell it to me, but that it is so different from the old style, it would not work.  I am still going to look at Henry's at the DRU this week and if it looks impossible, I will either buy a new backrest, or do without.  I have not had a backrest on for a while and have not missed it.  Of course no rides longer than an hour or so.

My old Ultimate had a square post for the backrest.

My old Ultimate was completely trashed (first few year production).  I was nearly sitting on the battery box.

I bought a new seat at Asheville Inzane.

I thought to reuse the backrest, but could not with the square post.  All Ultimate backrests have had the flat-stock posts for years and years.

I like the Mustang backrests better than than the Ultimate backrests, much better fit to my low back (at 5'9").  And all Mustang backrests have the same flat-stock posts that Ultimate does, and my Mustang backrest fits both my Bigboy and Lowboy (it was originally purchased for a Kawasaki Mean Streak).

IMHO, backrests do not wear out like seats, so keep your eyes out for used.

Ultimate backrest.

Mustang backrest. (not for Harley)
