My SIL who is still a Practicing Attorney has to go to downtown Chicago on occasion. Ross-da prez-do Not always go with her. I worry when she must go into the city. Couple years ago I was up there for Christmas and New Year. We drove to downtown Chicago and I Never felt so vulnerable walking on the street to Church from restaurant and back. ALL I carried was a folding lock blade knife. Sadly-my CCW permit NOT valid in Illinois. And I couldn't fly with my pistol WITHOUT jumping thru many hoops. TOO Many hoops as I was able to determine from the ether. And Even had I completed hoop jumping I STILL wasn't legal in Il. with my Missouri CCW. Maybe they-chicago-should wall off entirely 8 square blocks give the gang bangers weapons and ammo and let em have at it in that 8 square blocks with NO possibility of leaving once entered. Barbaric you say? Ask those families that have had children/kids under 16 killed by stray rounds on a drive bye. Or families that have lost people older than 16 who have lost family members to stray rounds on a drive bye. THAT-stray rounds on a drive bye or "aimed" rounds on a drive bye-I M H O-is what is truly barbaric. RIDE SAFE.

Just researched for the years 2011-2016 and came up with these beauties on homicides: 1. Detroit 2. St. Louis 3. New Orleans Factored in the total populations of cities over 250,000 and they were all within tenths of a point from each other. Chicago placed to #12 in the list for those years. https://www.thetrace.org/2017/01/chicago-not-most-dangerous-city-america/That may be only one statistical article, but others that are out there are all pretty close in agreement. D-troit is still on top on average. In a dark way, however, I guess that if you're the one being killed, that makes your location the worst, eh? Heck, back in the middle 70's I survived Inglewood, CA (sandwiched between So.Central and Watts/Compton). It was a war zone all night, every night. Cut my teeth there in a trauma hospital, second shift with on-call; it's all been a piece of cake from that time onward to the present. Invaluable experiences shape us all.

The largest cities are so huge, both geographic size and populations, that rather than look at the whole city, it is probably more accurate to look at sections/locals. And then do per capita violent crime rates for those sections. But.... it's not like it's a contest or something.
I spent 18 years working in DC (the murder capital for many years); the Federal part. I never visited Southeast (as it is called)... because I was not crazy (and it was illegal to go with my load bearing vest, P220, slung AR and 300+ rounds). Of course, I would have been arrested in minutes, the local hoodlums much longer, if ever.

Jess - You lucky guy -
I was STATIONED at the Navy Yard for my last 7 years in the service. The first tour - I was part of NavDIST Washington - I stood Officer of the Day duty. This also involved NavSta Anacostia and the Navy Married Enlisted Quarters south of Navy Research Lab ( I hated domestic disturbances !!!) .
The last Tour wasn't so bad - just one of the Tenant commands, where I had to do security inspection before going home and take care of things like emergency leave kind of stuff.

And that's how terrorism works (not that murders in Chicago are terrorism). The terrorists kill X number of people and the resulting publicity causes everyone to think they are in immediate and grave danger. The odds are still good. Most folks simply cannot comprehend 5,000 to 1 odds. Actually Jess is correct. The 5,000 to 1 is an average over the entire city. Based on neighborhood the odds may be much less or much more.

I intensely dislike DC, so I didn't feel lucky. But my USDVA job was a good one, and I needed to roll my military into civil service time toward a retirement. The ironic part of this was the USAF tried to send me to DC (Bolling, Buzzard's Point, Pentagon) twice and I begged and pleaded to go anywhere else, and managed to get out of it. So where was my post-military life..... DC. I fell asleep on the metro once and ended up in Anacostia. Domestics are one of the most dangerous calls to take. Irrational people worked up into a lather (often years in the making) who only hate cops worse than each other. I recall two (DOA) from Torrejon AB Spain. Both enlisted married housing. One guy shoots his wife and she crawls outside, and he reloads and finishes her off with dozens watching. Another, the wife sticks a butcher knife up under her cheating husband's ribs, he begs for help, so she helps him out to the car to take him to the hospital, he lays down in the backseat, and she locks the car, and goes back to bed. A funny one from Incirlik AB Turkey; guy is the senior enlisted adviser to the Wing Commander and long married to a Frenchwoman (living in base housing). He falls in love with his young Turk janitoress, the only way they can date is if he marries her (strict parents), so he marries her too. This ends badly for everyone, but some of the funniest stories you ever heard.

Man! Since we moved out to the ranch - it was like going on vacation when driving home from work. Still worked in the city where you would hear gunfire and all the usual city noises. So quiet out here! Guests would comment how quiet it is. OK now that I'm used to the quiet I have less tolerance for some neighbors dogs, dirt bikes, and the flight school from Centennial airport who practices overhead. And now - dang it - one neighbor practices shooting every other week before hunting season. (I practice too but go to the range.)
My sister lives in Cheverly MD and worked in DC for the SBA. I would visit and we would go to entertainment - dinner and to a comedy club - walking in between. Down dark streets in a really bad looking area down by the tracks. I said "are you sure we should be here?" She was just oblivious to the obvious danger. That's my sis. Yeah it was dangerous, she is just unaware. Or denial. She's "progressive" along with the rest of my family, who have been mugged but won't accept there's danger among the disenfranchised. I won't go anywhere I can't carry. And they don't get my money. I hated I had to pass thru Illinois to Inzane last year. Been boycotting them for a decade.

You can go thru state of IL carrying, just do not tell anyone. I doubt the police check your body if you get pulled over say for a speeding ticket? Am guessing the fine though for carrying is a lot though if for some odd reason you get caught?

The same is true for carrying hard drugs or your business partner's body, I suppose.
