Excessive comfort breeds weakness. PttP

WWW
« on: September 28, 2017, 11:23:58 AM »

The Rules of the Road clearly call for courteous and respectful communication.  I have over the past few months interpreted demeaning pet names for the President as disrespectful conversation.  Honestly such demeaning reference to any public figure who was or is known to be supported by some of our members is by nature disrespectful.

Recently I was reminded that I had not applied that standard to an ex-president.  It was incorrect on my part.  I do want to be consistent.

I am not interested in stifling meaningful conversation.  I do want to keep what goes on on the board in the category of what encourages all our members to come back and participate.

I ask you to keep a couple of points in mind as you post.  If you post regarding a controversial or not universally agreed upon subject (isn't that about everything?) please keep in mind that there will be members that oppose your viewpoint.  Try to communicate in such a way as to respect those who disagree with you almost as much as you respect those with whom you are in locked arms.

I forgot the other point.  Please keep our communication courteous, respectful, and in a mode that will support the ongoing well being of the VRCC community.

Thank you.

Please keep our communication courteous, respectful, and in a mode that will support the ongoing well being of the VRCC community.

Is that, "...support the ongoing well, being of the VRCC community", or, "...support the ongoing well-being of the VRCC community"?

In any case, I agree that name-calling of anyone, even public figures, even those whose actions have unnecessarily hurt others and proven their deeply flawed characters, is rude, and reflects poorly on the character and/or intelligence of the name-caller.  I, however,  am guilty of harshly picking on people's spelling and grammar, usually of those who I think can take as well as they give.  I try not to call those sons-of-mothers names, though.

I'm not certain to which two you were referring, Pete.

In your earlier post (to which ANY references?) you appeared to misunderstand the issue.  Disrespect to a politician is not the issue I addressed.  Disrespect to other VRCC members who support a person or organization is the issue.

At any rate, I was not seeking your permission.  I was simply telling you how things are.  If that troubles you I'll be willing to activate procedures to refund your dues.   Wink

As for the ANY reference it was towards the two who tried to turn ANY into Trump only.

And I will not ask or seek your permission for what I post.   cooldude

Thank you, Pete.  That's good to hear.

We may still have an issue.  If I were a strong supporter of Dwight Eisenhower and someone in my presence referred to him as a complete idiot that would show disrespect for me by implying my stupidity to support a complete idiot.  True friends who treat me with respect could disagree and express disagreement for Dwight Eisenhower's policies or behavior but out of respect for me they would avoid calling him the bubblehead in my presence.  I expect that kind of respect to be extended to our fellow members.

As to offended, did you mean ANY of the general membership or the general membership in their entirety?  Isn't the English language fun?

The earned respect is a concept often raised.  I don't necessarily find it consistent with my perspective.  There certainly is a form of respect for an individual, that connected to admiration, that does need to be earned.  There is another form of respect for a position.  When I was serving the USMC I would not have been well received had I excused my refusing to salute by indicating the company CO had not earned my respect.  This concept of respect for a position may include a lot of examples such as a police officer, a court judge, or the President of the United States.  Some of us may go so far as to extend this respect by position to family members, co-workers, bosses or even to that value assumed of a human being.  It's complicated, isn't it?

You don't need to ask my permission for what you or anyone posts.  You and others do need to adhere to the Rules of the Road.  Where someone else's and my interpretation of the Rules of the Road mine wins unless you're the president or vice president of the VRCC.   Wink

Please, everyone, continue to participate in and contribute to the VRCC community.  Please make an effort to play nice.  If you find a post exceeds or violates the Rules of the Road then bring that post to the staff's attention by clicking on "Report to Moderator".

Thank you for your contribution to the VRCC community.

I imagine you include me in the 3. And, that's ok. But, consider what life would be like if everyone thought the same way about things. Intelligent debate should be what we are after, not just here, but in our society as a whole. It is after all the extension of a free market system. I hope we as a club, as a country can get beyond this idea of 2 competing camps lobbing artillery at each other. It wasn't that long ago that healthy debate was encouraged, maybe it can come back. Healthy debate entails the idea that we are all in this together. That we both come from a place that we want what is best for our country. That we recognize the possibility the other person might have a good idea.

Evidently what you intended to write and what I read are different. I read it as "In the past it's been fine to disparage Obama, Clinton and Democrats in general. Now that our favored Republicans are in total control I'm not going to allow anyone to say anything bad about them". Intended or not, that's how I read it and was the basis for my comment.  I'm still confused what you're saying dispite trying to clarify.
So, just tell me which it is
1. I am allowed to insult the president or other Republicans as has happened so often to other politicians and parties here?
2. It's Okay as long as I don't infer another forum member is a son of a mother for having a different opinion?
3. Strictly verboten?

And lastly, I can think of about a dozen trolls who post here that cause 99 percent of the problems.  It's not the 2 or 3 that justly attempt to defend their beliefs.  I don't recall Meathead or Baldo (sorry haven't been here long enough to know who might be the third) ever insulting anyone in their comments. Indeed, from what I have seen their restraint is admirable.  Not so for the trolls.  Other specifically focused forums I am a member of ban trolls who post things that are potentially inflammatory.  They stay focused and thrive.  Others do not but don't seem to suffer nearly the amount of political venom posted here.

Too bad about that. Your earlier comment that membership was old and conservative is likely correct. Personally familiar with aging and it's frustrations.  Folks handle it in different ways.

Not all seniors are set in their ways.  I, for one, read posts by Baldo and Meathead, they present the opposite views.

As for Daddio, there is a difference in debating and trolling. Daddio, IMO, is(was) a troll.   No big loss there.

I do wonder about a supposition made here.  "Old and conservative"  I wonder why that is?

I have an opinion but I won't share it Smiley

Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous.
It is however, extremely unforgiving of: inattention, ignorance, incompetence or stupidity.
