Coming home on 9A there is a place where the road turns left and goes over a rise before the traffic light for North State Road  It was twilight
The traffic is 55 until about 1/8 mile before the rise.
I was in the left in the bmw going over the rise, tapping the rear brake so those behind would know the light is red and I am slowing.  The right lane ahead was clear so I moved right  WITHOUT MY SIGNAL and after checking my six for that lane

That may have been ok but a car that was apparently overtaking me in my lane switched to the right as he crested the hill and I heard his brakes lock up so I goosed the throttle and moved ahead and to the left as far as I could

He stopped maybe 10 feet behind me and Immediately he started screaming at me. I lifted my visor, and yelled back the speed limit was 45 not 90 and refrained from cursing (unusual for me) and moved to get off my bike as I did not appreciate the expletives. Then as I was unhooking the hit air I thought, hey I should have signaled and I was a cause of this and when light turned green ahead I moved with a signal into the left lane and proceeded up the road signalling right after a good distance to put cars between us.  I could hear him screaming all the way to Chappaqua Rd where I turned right expecting him to follow me but he didnt.

LESSON 1  SIGNAL ALL THE TIME even if you think you dont need to- Always Expect the unexpected, Dont count on being lucky even if you check your mirrors. Always have an escape route which I did whew

Glad you didn't get hurt. I've been guilty of the same thing on occasion .

Yup, being in the habit of turn signals, shoulder checks, complete stops, etc., even when there are no other drivers to see them, might be the difference between normal life and drastically altered life some day.

And if you are faster than other traffic could reasonably expect, slow down to pass, and at intersections, even when you have the right-of-way.

I normally go a bit faster than traffic but a few times I was about to change lanes and a guy came up on me pretty fast that I was not expecting a similar scenario to yours. The difference is I hadn't changed lanes yet.

Yes when I am about to enter the 3 lane highway on the start of the acceleration lane  I usually  put my left hand back on my side bag crash bar  and then turn my head all the way to the left to check for all lanes of traffic.  I also leave a whole lot of room between me and the car next in front when I do that so I have choices entering the highway which could have cars moving 70+ or even dead stopped ahead  You never know from moment to moment when ny traffic will just stop dead and then start again

As most all y'all are aware I drove 18 wheeler for a lot of years and a lot of miles. Right at 70-75 feet overall length eight and a half feet wide and thirteen and a half feet tall and all lights on at all hours and using my indicators and a lot of times right at 40 tons of weight people not only didn't see me they choose to ignore my indicators. Evan-we have All done the lane change thingy sans indicators and in my case most likely Will do so again. Sometimes it is a split second reaction to a universal pain in the ass-traffic. Driven in yer neck of the woods-I don't miss drivin in yer neck of the woods. Glad you weren't hurt and the dud you pissed off kept going. I try not to piss off other drivers or riders-I ain't always successful. RIDE SAFE.

Lessons I see is:

If not passing anyone stay out of the left lane.

Passing on the right is no good.

At the wrong time, in the wrong place, and confronting the wrong person in the year 2017 can earn one a trip to the morgue from multiple gunshot wounds.  This is America in the 21st century.
I would never get off of my cycle to approach another vehicle with an enraged, concealed driver.
It's just not worth it.
