This reminded me of a neighbor about 35 yrs. ago. Big rough 'n tough old Navy guy, widower for nearly 20 years, lived across the street from us. Not long after his wife died he got a Collie pup, it made his life complete. At about 12 yrs. old, the Collie developed terminal cancer. The last day of his suffering, I watched as this big rough old gent carried him out to the car on his way to the vet to have the dog put down. He was crying his heart out, my four girls watched through the window and were crying as well. In the months prior to that day, he would carry the dog out to the car, roll down the window so he could stick his nose into the wind and take him for a ride to a nearby park where he used to let him run loose, chase squirrels, roll on the grass....the things dogs do when they're free to enjoy life. Apparently the dog was our Navy friend's lifeline.....he also passed away within weeks.

I've been dealing with this same thing, a 14 year old golden retriever.  I've been caring her up and down the stairs for the last week so she can go outside.  This weekend she stopped eating her food, hard to let go of such a loyal companion but it's time.

Sorry Ramie! It's a hard thing to do! I'm setting here looking at my best friends urn, Pete. The best friend I've ever had. It ripped my heart out to put him down.   Cry   Guess I'm just a sissy. It's been a couple of years and still brings tears to my eyes. I sure miss him!!

Thanks for the sympathy, I'm a sissy too when it comes to it, the wife is taking her to the vet this morning after a difficult night.  Had to get up about 2:30 in the morning and take her out side, she can barely stand enough to relieve herself and you can just see it's painful for her.

I had to make THAT TRIP last year with my 15 year old Black Lab...
She knew what was coming. When the Vet came in and talked to me on what would happen with her.
He got the STUFF... walked over to her. I was holding her down, she pushed herself up.
She sat up, put her head on my arm, looked at me with those eyes, and was telling me.... I am ready now.
He put the meds in..... she went limp in a few seconds.... Then I broke down..... Cry
Dang it..... something is wrong with this computer screen.... all blurry now.....
