I guess if the NAACP can call the Star Spangled Banner racist, they can call anything and anyone racist.
I say it's time to disband and replace the NAACP.
We need the NAAAP. The national association for the advancement of American people!

the controversy is due to wording in the third stanza. Frances Scott Key penned the second and third stanza of his poem after being released from the British warships before their departure. It refers to slaves and hireling.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Some historians suppose he, being a slave holder, harbored resentment against blacks as manysided and fought with the British in the revolution. Other say the slaves were the impressed often kid napped British sailors who often went unpaid and the hirelings were the officers whom he was calling hired mercenaries of the Crown. He never said what he intended the words to mean. Virtually no one sings the second much less third stanza of the poem. Indeed I didn't know they existed until a few days ago when I ran across an opinion piece in an online news source.

So, the word slave is in there once. At the time it was written, there were slaves. It doesn't say anything about slaves, or ownership, or anything at all. If anything, it equates the slave with the hireling in fear and death.
Guess we're gonna have another word that only certain people of certain colors can say. The rest of us will just have to say the "S" word.

I'm not very good at understanding poems or songs. But that sounds to me like he is saying hirelings (whoever that is) and slaves were chicken and afraid to fight.

To me it's sounds like he's saying no matter where the British Crown hirelings (officers) and slaves (impressed seaman) go, they will not be safe from US might. Instead of banning it, those that want it so, should just agitate to have the government officially adopt only the first verse. I always thought "America The Beautiful" would make a better anthem. A little easier to sing but it mentions God so that's another can of worms.

What a crock, here is the lyrics and the meaning its a copy and paste and if need be I will be happy to type it personally with a few changes but hopefully that wont be necessary. So now that Colan couldn't be exonerated by his actions and since the NAACP is pretty much against anything American, then lets destroy and attack the National Anthem as racist. Because your client is a P.O.S. let us call all history racist and evil to make ourselves look better. But like all things that on the surface seem wrong you have to view things according to the time they were written in. Context in bible study as well as any history is paramount to understanding the truth of what was written. To many today have no idea of what things really mean since they were not versed in history. The truth is so far off the spin doctors path that its amazing that it even flies. But even Francsis Scott Key who wrote it and when you look into his actions and beliefs you cannot find anything to be offended by no matter what color you are. In fact you should be applauding the national anthem and embracing the man that wrote it since in his time he was a radical and put his time, money, and reputation where his mouth is and actually represented some slaves legally for free. I'm sure him representing blacks at the time so much so that he was called the black person lawyer, did not help his business either. http://www.american-historama.org/1801-1828-evolution/star-spangled-banner-lyrics.htm And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Meaning of Star Spangled Banner Lyrics Verse 3
● Francis Scott Key describes the British as arrogant and boastful in the lyrics 'that band who so vauntingly swore' ● He is venting his anger at the British with the "foul footsteps' pollution" lyrics inferring that the British poisoned the ground on which they walked ● But the poison and corruption had been washed away by the blood of the British ● The Star Spangled Banner lyrics "the hireling " refers to the British use of Mercenaries (German Hessians) in the American War of Independence ● The Star Spangled Banner lyrics "...and slave" is a direct reference to the British practice of Impressment (kidnapping American seamen and forcing them into service on British man-of war ships). This was a Important cause of the War of 1812 ● Francis Scott Key then describes the Star Spangled Banner as a symbol of triumph over all adversity ● Meaning of Star Spangled Banner Lyrics Verse 3
● The Star Spangled Banner lyrics "...and slave" is a direct reference to the British practice of Impressment (kidnapping American seamen and forcing them into service on British man-of war ships). This was a Important cause of the War of 1812This was one of the reasons that the Treaty of Tripoli was made also since the Muslims would make slaves of the captured sailors or hold them for ransom. Francis Scott Key https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Scott_KeyKey purchased his first slave in 1800 or 1801 and owned six slaves in 1820. Mostly in the 1830s, Key manumitted (set free) seven slaves, one of whom (Clem Johnson) continued to work for him for wages as his farm's foreman, supervising several slaves.
Throughout his career Key also represented several slaves seeking their freedom in court (for free), as well as several masters seeking return of their runaway slaves. Key, Judge William Leigh of Halifax, and bishop William Meade were administrators of the will of their friend John Randolph of Roanoke, who died without children and left a will directing his executors to free his more than four hundred slaves. Over the next decade, beginning in 1833, the administrators fought to enforce the will and provide the freed slaves land to support themselves.
Key publicly criticized slavery's cruelties, so much that after his death a newspaper editorial stated "So actively hostile was he to the peculiar institution that he was called 'The black person Lawyer' .... because he often volunteered to defend the downtrodden sons and daughters of Africa. Mr. Key convinced me that slavery was wrong—radically wrong." In June 1842, Key attended the funeral of William Costin, a free, mixed race resident who had challenged Washington's surety bond laws.
Key was a founding member and active leader of the American Colonization Society and its predecessor, the influential Maryland branch, the primary goal of which was to send free African-Americans back to Africa. However, he was removed from the board in 1833 as its policies shifted toward abolitionist. The song as well as the man and nation should be held tightly and applauded by all blacks and whites. The only hate that is present is in the NAACP.

While I will readily admit that the Star Spangled Banner is a difficult piece to sing (not too many non-pros have that kind of range) - It stirs my heart everytime I hear it, in whatever arraingment that is respectful. Instrumental, a capella, anything in between - I don't think I could ever grow tired of that melody and those words.
Now - for that nonsense - this maybe one case where a do-nothing Congress can be a good thing.

Well, I don't have a problem with the Star Spangled Banner. At least the stanza that people actually sing. But even as a kid, I remember asking my teacher why America the Beautiful wasn't the anthem instead. Personally, I think it's a better song, it doesn't require a 3 octave range to belt out, and it expresses patriotism perfectly.

I served with Men of color. From graduation of Boot Camp to A school to the R A G outfit to the Fleet-when We stood Formation We ALL stood Formation as a Team. Can't recollect Anyone complaining too much bout dat unless we were wearing whites. Too this day Our National Anthem Still causes me to choke up-well that and TAPS. NOT above reminding youngsters about cap removal during the playing of Our National Anthem. Considering this has roots in california surprises me not in the least. Had an old gnarly E-6 summed it up once or twice-iffin you ain't part of the cure you ARE the problem. Seems to fit here. RIDE SAFE.

I was under the impression we lived in a democratic society here in the "Land of The Free and Home of the Brave". Usually that would mean the majority has the last word, not some small group of perpetually offended. Maybe it is time to remind those small groups that while they can complain indefinitely, the rest of us just don't find their cause a reason to change a thing.

I stand corrected, but I was not referring to the electoral process. Rather, society at large and the social morals that should run day to day business. Sadly, all too often the whiners get their way. Some times the squeaky wheel just needs to squeak to remind us it's time to change the pads (now it's motorcycle related).
