We sprinkle "fly predators" (live insects that eat fly larva)
on horse poop out in the pastures once a month. I perceive
it to work and think we have hardly any flies compared
to our other horse friends...

this process has been used for years to help stop in-wanted vegetation, especially ones that have been introduced to this county.  I was privy to bugs being introduced to eat plants.  they did a great job,  when the infestation died the bugs died out.  Didn't like any of our plants.

Though not sure taking all bugs out is a good idea.

Read somewhere that the insect population was irradiated in Chernobyl from the excessive amounts of radiation. Dead vegetation or leaves that come down in the fall do not degrade over time from the lack of insects. Eventually throwing off the entire ecosystem. I guess they have a purpose on this earth other than annoying us.
