Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: November 10, 2017, 07:08:36 AM »

I awoke early that big day… Plenty of time for all I needed to do before departure; so, … why didn’t I get it all done early? Do I have some built-in pacing mechanism, a metronome of some sort, that causes me to subconsciously consume all available time… plus 5%?

Beats anything I’ve ever seen, but there it is plain as day for anybody to see who bothers to watch! Maybe I just do it subconsciously to create a reminder to myself that I don’t have to bother stressing about ‘running late’ or meeting any schedule… then proving the point! Who knows… The mind can do some mighty curious things, and it can play some surprising tricks on us…

No sweat, I’d wound up close enough to my target that there simply was no reason for hurry. Well, unless you count racing against the thermometer! South Louisiana can be hot and humid, and even though neither were oppressive this time down there, they were both still above my comfort level. Ah, who cares, I’d just stop more often and turn in for the day a bit earlier, I told myself… Hey, this retirement thing sure has some advantages!

I did finally roll out, and I took US HWY 190 instead of I-12… A couple of reasons for that, but passing just north of Baton Rouge instead of plowing right throw the middle of town was first on that list! Traffic usually moves OK, but it always seems to be heavy no matter when I make the run… It's even worse now, since Hurricane Katrina drove many residents from further south to relocate to this city...

Once in a while, however, the dreaded 'giant parking lot' feature appears, and that is always followed by the totally unpleasant 'first gear creep'… Did I mention it also is usually hot and humid down there? US 190 is an acceptable alternative to even the risk of boo-boos in the heart of that capital city...

Soon enough we were back on I-10, and we were making good time towards Lafayette… and the turn-off for New Iberia. South through town, I was carefully watching signs and doing what I could to navigate the not tricky at all maneuvers and the zigs and zags necessary to cover the final 40 miles or so…

I still managed to take a wrong turn, as so often happens, but I recovered fairly easily! Yep, I cast aside all claim to manliness and any obligation I might have to the stoic tradition of men everywhere… and I stopped to ask for directions!

I've swallowed my pride many, many times all over North America and done this... nothing new here at all. I once was chatting with two of my pals. One of them asked me how many miles ALI had on her now, and I told him. WOW! That's a lot of miles, he'd responded. The other pal then observed, she wouldn't have half that many miles if I could navigate worth a damn!

I know I should get a GPS… I’ve been told that a lot! I just hate the thought of giving in yet again to the avalanche of technology, though, and to the constant intrusion gadgets and gizmos are having into our ‘normal’ lives… Besides, I can’t even spell GPS…

Back in New Iberia, it seems I’d turned right when I should have delayed that turn for the next road south of the one I did take… Oh well, we'd only traveled about ten miles down the wrong road towards Abbeville, but it did afford a break opportunity - a chance to cool down, rest my bod, replenish body fluids, and flex my buttocks… all items very much in need of attention!

We backtracked, made the correct turn towards Avery Island, and finally we were pulling up to the ticket booth and chatting with the nice gentleman who gave directions and other useful information… plus the ticket to place on my windshield and later become a souvenir.  Why a guy who lives the way I do bothers to collect 'treasures' and memorabilia is another major mystery, but still I do it... makes for frequent and very busy future trash days!

I rode in, stopped and took a couple of pictures… then rode back out! I did go inside the store and pick up an online ordering booklet (I didn’t have the address with me where I wanted to send a surprise), but I did take a pass on the plant tour… How could I do that, you might wonder?

Well, first of all, it would be awhile before the next one started, and I was already hot and tired. Second, I simply had no interest… I’ve done a couple of ‘plant tours’ in times past, and, while interesting, they just don’t have much of a draw for me anymore. Lastly, the product itself holds no huge appeal for me, so not getting any samples was not considered a significant sacrifice.

Do I still get credit for making the ride out there? Am I going to have to return again to fully atone for my previous transgressions? Have I actually committed yet another transgression by not doing the tour? Oh, woe is me… An approving conscience can be such a relentless task master sometimes!

I mounted-up and headed back out. I only made it as far as New Iberia before the motels I’d spotted on the way in popped to the fore of my thinking! OK, let’s just make it time to settle in for the day and take stock of my situation… I got a room…

I needed to recheck the weather forecast anyway, and to calculate some miles and contemplate some possible stopping points between there and Clinton, TN. I also needed to verify if my preliminary long-cut route through Missouri was still the way to go… Planning again... Go figure!

I’d been looking at that seemingly weird, very much not direct route as one way to avoid the rain to our north but to continue riding each day… two of the many things I do enjoy doing! My thought was to hook around behind that green moisture blob on the weather map and follow it eastward… but not too closely, of course! No rest for the weary… or wicked either, apparently… especially when must-do planning is involved. Anybody feeling sorry for me yet?

I was waiting for the part when you heard the shofar blow at the end of Yom Kippur (day of atonement)

What was I thinking ?     2funny

Oss

I would rather ride my bike and think about the Lord than sit in shul (thats jewish church to y'all christian type folk) and think about riding my bike.  Guess that makes me a rider?

The island is a cool place. I toured it with JP and the one armed Bandit years ago. Tasted Tabasco ice cream, Tabasco soda, and several other things. They all fell under the catagory, that just because you can doesn't mean that you should. The crawfish was very good though and made up for a lot of the nasty stuff that I tried. Enjoy the ride, and keep em coming.  cooldude

Rob,

That is most definitely on my 'To-Do' list!!! In Cookeville, TN, this weekend hanging out with some... well, central casting couldn't have come up with a better assortment of characters!!! Certifiable and committed to merriment and mirth, these folks are responsible for a great deal of pain in my rib cage... No physical trauma, of course, just LMAO non-stop! Once this breaks up, I don't have any concrete plans, but there are a couple of options rattling around in my noggin'... Probably none of them will work-out, though, and something entirely unforeseen will be what actually happens... Oh well, I wouldn't want it any other way! Please say HI! to Brenda for me...

Dan,

Me too! Not from any regrets or longings, though, but due entirely to the large time being had this weekend! Crazyhorse does arrange what has turned out to be one of my favorite events... He's in the process of relocating his home to another state, however, so I don't have a clue if this will continue next year. Sure hope so... I see folks here that I don't normally run across (figuratively not literally!) anywhere else... We'll just have to see... In the meantime, we party on!!!

Mark,

For a fleeting moment there, I thought I had struck a chord of sympathy with somebody... Your time is coming, ol' buddy, so stay the course and look forward to all the adventure that awaits you... done the road... one of these days... Heck, you're already doing some major 'prep work' riding-wise, so don't feel badly about not getting as much as you'd like... I don't either! Please give 'Ginger' a great big ol' hug for me!!!

Oss,

Nope, only horns I've heard blown were by folks angry with some sort of boo-boo I'd committed! That is often followed by a 'finger wave'... It's probably a good thing I don't read lips, too! You definitely are a rider, indeed! For a career guy with a hefty load of responsibility, you do manage to work-in an amazing amount of riding! For sure, your riding resume is most impressive!

Oss, I admire the balance in your life... You obviously take your faith very seriously, and from your own writing, I've learned that you are much more than a token 'shul' member or passive pew-packer. I respect that very much. You also are a loving husband, father, and friend to many... yours truly in that latter group! Add to all of that a very demanding career, and, well... you do have a full plate! That you also manage to incorporate as much riding as you do into that very busy life... well, that's why you are you, and why many of us think so highly of you! Proud to know you!

Damon,

WOW! I imagine touring that facility with a 'Cajun Tour-guide' would really add an element to the adventure missed by most of us! Having the Bandit along too, well... what can I say! Yeah, I, too, can choke down some pretty nasty stuff when with special company, and you most definitely were! Two of my very dear friends... just like you... Thanks for the reply, and you may rest assured, I do plan to keep on keeping on, and as long as folks seem to enjoy my musings, I'll continue with that, too...

Bruce, Next time you're in my part of the woods, stop by and I'll give you a GPS. Since I'm down to one Valk, I don't even need the GPS on it. I can only ride locally. Come and get it and we'll have Trout Dude hook it up.

Bruce, just because you have a GPS that doesn't mean you won't get lost! I've gotten lost with the GPS and a map! That's why I follow Dick or Damon most times. Even then I still get lost at times  crazy2

Good luck with that, Terry! Hope it all works out for ya... Glad you enjoyed the surprise too. I got a surprise from you back a couple of years ago, when you gave ALI back to me! Still shake my head sometimes thinking about all that went with that adventure... BTW, Jim Dorman asked me to say hello to you, and he sends his best regards to you.

Man, I appreciate that a lot!

Give my greetings back to both Jim and Sam! Great memories of deep fried pickles and Cardinals! Sounds crazy but I treasure those memories!

Bruce,
Another excellent read.   Envy is rearing it's ugly head, again...............
Well, for all except that Tabasco ice cream.   I must have led a sheltered life.   No frigg'n  way will that ever pass over my taste buds.

If you'd like to experience deep fried Cardinal, just wait until Kentucky plays Louisville in basketball this year.  Wink

Terry,

Will do, my friend... FWIW, I also enjoyed seeing your reaction to seeing lizards and fireflies for the first time, also! Oh, the memories!!! Oyster bar with no oysters, BBQ place with no ribs... You got the 'full Monty' treatment with me!

Ron,

I gotta agree with you on the use of that product on ice cream or anything, really... Not my thing at all... As for the cardinals... Have your way with the Louisville team, but please leave the birds alone! They are my favorite example of aviary excellence... I talk to them, you know...

Bruce,
The Cardinals (birds) are safe.  The wife buys more bird seed that groceries (I think).   Currently watching a couple of these beautifully feathered friends munch on sunflower seeds at a couple of different feeders in the back yard while a blue jay is going back an forth between the two feeders chasing the Cardinals away.   They'll both get their fill.   We always plant bird and butterfly friendly plants to keep them coming back year after year.   What's fun is when the Humming birds are here.   Nothing like getting buzzed by combating humming birds on the patio.
