black friday deal with us cellular:

can get a free lg G6 or samsung s8 or motorola z2 force for free upgrade.

suggestions on those who have each?

I was leaning towards the motorola z2 since not one ounce of trouble from my old moto G phone and like a few features such as flick it twice light comes on or twist sideways camera comes on vs. having to push buttons such as on the samsung s8.  Also, read reviews motorola more shatterproof and rugged casing but the screen scratches VERY easily that I know is the only real drawback VERY similar in features overall samsung vs. motorola though.

samsung s8 EVERYONE GETS but not so sure I like the wrap around edging of the screen on the side would be more apt to break am sure of it if dropped than the motoral z2 for sure even in a protective case.

I am use to the motorola platform having owned an outdated moto G for like 3-4 years now.  I can learn the samsung easy enough but read reviews and some (probably like me as well) do not like the too intrusive BIXBY user interface the new samsung s8 uses now is a hate or love it with BIXBY.

ideas on which one to get or anyone have the new motorola z2 force since ONLY drawback I see is the screen scratches very easily which it does since I tried running my fingernail on the screen in the store and it did scratch VERY easily.  Was going to go that route before I saw that thin very easy to do scratch and yes, a screen protector will cure that easy enough but also read reviews some are having more issues with the motorola over the samsung with BIXBY new interface I may not like.

Or,  could skip android and go apple iphone 8 for free of which I have never used apple products.

what us cellular is doing though to get a FREE phone is REQUIRED to pay 11.99 protection plan per month on the free phones for 30 months (so is not technically free) even though past 10+ years never had a protection plan never used it once  dropping phones (I am very careful) plus they are requiring unlimited data plan which costs MORE than say 2gb, 6gb or what we currently have is 10gb shared data plan for 4 smartphones.  Once again, NOT free costing us more each month in data plans we do not need nor will ever use plus device protection of 11.99 per month for 30 months.  Once again, NOT free so to speak, phone is free, but they are making money on higher data plans and device protection not needed.

oh yah, forgot, they also take away my wifes 15% corporate discount by going to unlimited data plan.  So, NOT really such a great deal after all found that out late last night going to a store since first store was clueless (new lady).

loss of discount = 15% increase + $11.99 fee?

I'd keep shopping. I bought out my Samsung S5 because I still don't use
or need 1/2 the functions and the camera is awesome....

I can only speak to the Samsung and the iPhone.

I have to carry an iPhone 6 for work. I hate it, hate it hate it HATE IT. Nothing makes sense, nothing is where it should be, no back button for navigating. I understand those who have started with this system are okay with it, but if you're used to an Android, I'd highly recommend NOT going to iPhone. My wife is the same way, was assigned an iPhone for work and can't stand it.

The only one of the others I've dealt with is the Samsung S8. My wife has an S8 and I have a Note 8. There's a reason "everyone" goes with the Samsungs. They make damn good devices.

I've got a simple TPU bumper case on my Note 8 and it works fine, it's been dropped a few times and no issues so far *Knock on wood*.

For a nicer phone I would recommend a service plan, but don't buy it through the carrier, look at these guys for good coverage without spending a ton:

https://www.squaretrade.com/

We got it on one of my elder spawn's devices, she cracked the screen and they quickly sent us money, no hassle. Carrying a $1000 Note 8 I DEFINITELY have coverage on it!

Look for the best camera...everything else is pretty much a level playing field these days on high end phones. Motorola is pure android without the proprietary crap that you cannot uninstall. I am using an LG G4 which uses a removable battery...never have taken it out, but I guess if down the road that is the only thing wrong...cheap to replace...not sure what the new LG's have though....very good camera on mine with full manual control if needed for the best sunset shots.

One other thought I just had - I can't stand Bixby (Not Bixby specifically, but any of 'em, Bixby, Siri, Cortana, Alexa, etc). I hate talking to my devices, I don't want them talking back to me either. There are apps you can get that will remap the Bixby key to something else. I've got mine set up so that the Bixby key fires up the camera, for instance.

My experience with the Note8, as copied & pasted from the Samsung BBS;

Note 8 backspace runs wild...

...and other woes.

While attempting to edit texts before sending (mostly because of the laughable voice to text) the phone has the frequent problem with the cursor racing backwards deleting the characters even though I'm not touching the keyboard. Say I place the cursor between the g & i of the word wagging to change it to wiggling- after the first second, third, whatever time I tap the backspace key, it just takes off by itself and will erase everything "upstream" of the place I started backspacing until it's eaten it all or stops because I've stabbed the keyboard behind the cursor to relocate it. Two different US Cellular reps tried but don't have any suggestions.

Also, the phone has little freezups like not responding to the delete command in gallery when you're viewing a separate picture no matter how many times you tap it. Sometimes you can just wait a few seconds, other times you need to swipe to the next picture and then swipe back to the one you want to delete and it'll work. Voice text is horrible compared to my Note 3 which worked fine. With the 8 I have to talk to it like I'm addressing a hard of hearing  5 year-old. It actually decided I want things like "heart bait" instead of "heartbeat" and, " a pinion" instead of "opinion". Sometimes what it writes isn't even a word.

Loved my Note3 and my two previous Galaxys, but if Samsung offered me my money back on this Note8 I would gladly mail it back. As Kripke said on BBT, "It's kwap".

Hello there, @userSfiBfZ9P1Y
I certainly want to assist you further with this matter. To better do that, can the Community have some added details about your specific device and this concern? Things that will help the most would be the exact model number and Baseband version (both under Settings>About Device) for your device and what you've already tried to fix it. Thanks!

Model SM-N950U

Baseband ver. N950USQU1AQI9

What I've done to fix it? Asked two different US Cellular reps about it and posted here. I'm not a phone repairman, I'm a man who paid about a grand w/tax for a phone. If these problems are going to be ongoing, I'm thinking the Warranty of Merchantability is going to be my fix, and I'll need an RMA number for the phone.

Do you recall any suggestions from the US Cellular reps or what they did to the phone? The reason I ask is so that we don't just repeat old steps and waste your time with that.  Smiley Happy

Re: Note 8 backspace runs wild...

First one went to Settings, Apps, Messages and cleared data or a cache. Both are shown in the "storage" section so I don't know which (or both) she emptied. Don't remember the phone doing it (zooming backspace) for a day or two, but obviously that didn't fix it. Since it's a brand new phone, I said I'd check online for advice from Samsung and report it in case it's widespread. Likewise the phone not always responding when I go to delete a picture from gallery and/or during camera usage like cropping a picture and then immediately swiping to the original pic to delete it.

Alrighty then! Let's try some troubleshooting steps, just let me know how these go!
1.Are all your Apps are up to date? You have 2 places that you need to look. Google Play store and Galaxy app store. Go to both and check My Apps. Make sure there is no app that needs updating.
2.Is your phone OS up to date? Go to Settings, About phone and check for software update. Make sure you have the latest phone software.
3.Clear phone cache. Instructions are here.
4.Restart your phone in Safe mode. This is just to help you isolate the issue if it is caused by 3rd part apps. Instructions are here.

Re: Note 8 backspace runs wild...

I will check those, but at this point I have to believe you're just messing with me. How can Samsung not know if there's been a patch or update to fix a "rapid-fire backspace" problem? Obviously this isn't happening on every Note 8 so if there's no official aknowledgement of this and known fix, we seem to be going to the old, turn it on and off a few times routine and I've already had plenty of time wasted on this between early Sept. and today. If this is truly an unknown problem, would Samsung want to let my local US Cellular store issue me a new one and send mine back for research?

Re: Note 8 backspace runs wild...  [ New ]

You can certainly reach out to your carrier, or even direct to Samsung via 1-800-726-7864 to set up an evaluation and even repair. I'm sure they would love to look over things but, since that would mean not having your phone for a while, running through some troubleshooting to make sure it's nothing minor is always best.  Smiley Happy

Re: Note 8 backspace runs wild...  [ New ]

Your answer is why I'll probably never buy another Samsung product. I have 3 Samsung TVs and this Note8 is my 4th or fifth of their phones. Imagine if you had a 2 week old car where the radio just "kinda worked" and you were told, "I'm sure they would love to look over things but, since that would mean you'd  be walking everywhere since you wouldn't have your car for a while, maybe you should start wiggling wires under the dash or pounding on the steering wheel". Obviously my local carrier DOESN'T know what's wrong and Samsung wants me to become a Samsung repairman. I will try my local provider one more time and if the phone cannot be dealt with then I will contact my State Attorney General's office to to initiate anything I can to take your arrogance down.

Hey, ¿spoom, I hate to tell you this, but you also have a problem with your "enter" key running wild!  Shocked I don't think I've ever had to scroll so much to get through one message on this board, especially one without any pictures!

Be sure to click " ✓ Accept as another problem" then fix your enter key.

well,  after much thought,  I bit the bullet and me personally did not get a new cell phone, but the wife did instead.   Long 3+ hours sitting at us cellular getting 2 phones swapped out.  My old motoG to my wifes 1 year old samsung s7 while my wife got from her samsung s7 a new iphone 8 for free with me being upgrade eligible the past 4+ years.

Who knew it took well over 1 1/2 hours for us cellular to swap out an android samsung s7 info. to an apple based iphone 8.  Man, that ticked me off taking 3 hours out of a VERY nice black friday day high of 62 degrees when I could have been riding my cycle those 4-5 hours today... tickedoff

My 2 kids are iphone users while my wife sure hopes she likes going from android to apple product since she is stuck with it the next 30 months or so.  Was her idea to go with apple but she never investigated or looked at the apple version to get a feel for it.  Her problem but better not be since also have to get the stupid 11.99 per month for 30 month protection plan to get the 798 dollar iphone 8 for free.

ONLY issue I see is my old motoG gmail.com account did not transfer to her old samsung s7 gmail account still shows my wifes email and have NO idea how to swap  gmail.com  emails to her phone, any ideas????

You just need to go to settings, mail and setup another account on the phone. It will just use that account and pickup your emails from them.

I love my I phone X and with some time Im sure your wife will like the phone.

Next time just order your phone from Apple, I had it shipped to my house and it came pretty much setup I just had to do a few things.

https://mediatemple.net/community/products/dv/204404384/how-can-i-set-up-email-on-my-iphone-or-ipod-touch

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201320

I found Android OS to be awkward and at first had problem with Apple since it is intuitive. You almost want to overthink the things you need to do since for most OS including Android they are not as intuitive and easy.

I copied and pasted direct from the BBS, in one capture, so that there would not be any question of editing or whatever.
