We're getting mostly rain / sleet right now - temps just above freezing. It is not expected to drop into freezing range until Saturday night.
NC is almost as bad as Atlanta and other southern cities on "SNOW" and freezing roads. I don't usually have problems (since I grew up out in Kansas), but I really hate getting out on these roads because so many drivers around here are utterly clueless - 4WD DOES NOT EQUAL 4wheel STOP -
I'll be chugging along at a safe speed, when I get passed by Billy Bob flying by me in his jacked up 4wd Pickup - and about a mile down the road I'll pass Billy Bob in his wrecked truck off the side of the road. That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Boy we have a lot of those guys too. We don't get all that much snow here, ice is much more common (and dangerous). And you're right, it's not the snow and ice that's bad, but you take your life (and nice car) in your hands if you venture out and around in it with the other drivers.
My wife (who I only partially taught to drive successfully) called one blizzard night and said she was lost and stuck in a snow bank. I asked if she was close to any motels, and she said there was one down the road. Telling her to lock up the truck where it was and walk over and get a room was apparently not the response she was looking for.
