If you had to move 2 cars, a Valk and a house of furniture from Raliegh to Kansas City KS, How would you do it ?

We're thinking packers and movers for the house hold goods, It's the vehicles that are the problem. 2 drivers and no hitches (yet) - adding a hitch and trailer wiring will be about $500 installed.

We're planning on April,  so a flyback and me riding the Valk back to KC is a possibility.

COST is a very big concern....

A U-Haul truck and car dolly. Put the Valkyrie inside the truck. Have your wife drive the other vehicle. Depending on how much furniture you could also load that in the truck.

They can deck over a cage in the moving van trailer. That would leave you one M/C and one cage iffin my math iz right. They take logistics bars and put them over the cage in question. Then plywood on top of logistics bars to create a deck over the cage. The logistics bars lock into tracks in the trailers sidewalls. Did it a number of times when doing household more years ago than I care to recollect. BUT if you add the hitch-purchase NOT rent-then you'd have it whenever ya needed it. My 2 cents and most likely Not worth what ya paid!  2funny RIDE SAFE.

I like this idea - we were wanting to bring our bedroom stuff which probably could be stuffed into the back of the truck. Our other problem is 2 cats but that's pretty trivial compared to the vehicles.

Well, you could try U Ship, it's kind of a reverse bidding site for transporters.   Someone may be able to stay within that $500 budget.

I haul vehicles for friends all over the US.   But, I couldn't touch that to cover the cost of doing it.   Someone needing a back haul might be able to help you out.    Feel free to give me a shout if I can help advise you.

No, we KNOW this will be more than $500 - the $500 was how much getting a hitch and trailer wiring on ONE of our cars was going to run.

I drove cross country with two cats in a big pet carrier in back of my El Camino (w camper back). It was often cold and they didn't like it, but they lived.  Few (to no) motels want pets (so don't even ask).  I'd just get a room around back, then run the carrier into the bathroom on the QT (and kept the door closed).  Never a problem.  Always leave the do-not-disturb sign up.  If they get to yowling, neighbors (with shared bath vents) can report you.

PS:  if it was me, I wouldn't move from Raliegh to KC.  It is nice to eat though.

Also, in a pinch, one car can be sold, then replaced in the new town.

When I got out of service, my big dresser HOG went in the semi trailer, though I had to ride it up a short steep ramp (and I did not drain gas, just turned the petcock off).  The military would never move cars though.

moving a house of furniture would be a bitch..why not sell the house and buy another one where ever you wind up and just use a u-haul for the rest of the stuff?

cooldude Plus 1.
Also, it looks like that is going to be about 1100 miles west, probably with headwinds.  Meaning, fuel mileage is going to be poor.  The higher and larger the vehicle, the more that headwind is going to eat fuel.  So, consider selling, giving, and/or throwing away most furniture except heirlooms or other "special" items.  Such things can usually be replaced by way of craigslist and the like when you get to Kansas City.  The bonus of doing this is less time packing and unpacking and the almost requisite "oops, that didn't get packed very well".  This may not be workable for you but I believe it is worth consideration.

Maybe some background is in order  -

MIL just turned 80 in August, wife is only child. MIL also  has got diagnosis of first stages of dementia (what my mom died from). All my siblings are also out there in Kansas, as well as a number of other relations (cousins, etc.) . Job hunting for both of us has not been going so well. We figure it's probably a sign from the universe that it's time to go home - besides, MIL  wants to pass on her house to us.

You guys have definitely had some ideas that we hadn't thought of. Selling off the furniture (at least most of it) that we've had since we got married 30 years ago wasn't something we had thought of for one. We're already dumping one car - a 1988 Acura Integra with 280,000 miles - but getting rid of any more isn't going to work for us.

Why not leave now ? It's going to take us that long to get ready to go -  we've been here 20+ years.

Thanks for all the ideas up to now, please keep them coming.

1100 miles from Raleigh to KC. Looking at a 10' Uhaul pulling a front wheel only car trailer is going to rent for about $975. Plus fuel costs estimated at $250. Add in at least 1 night in a cheap Motel 6 (Nashville is about 1/2 way), and you're looking at about $1400 plus the cost of the movers and the cost of gas for the 2nd car.

I'd advise driving one car (with the cats) and riding the motorcycle, then flying back for the 2nd car. It will be a LOT cheaper in the long run. Flight will cost between $120-150 and gas for the 2nd car will be cheaper than for the truck pulling the trailer.

I would do like someone mention above with the uhaul and dolly and load the Valkyrie inside. I would think you would be able to sell the older car and that should cover the costs involved to move to Kc.

I would think after twenty years in the same place you have a lot of keep sakes you don't want to get rid of.

Just did a similar move for my daughter from Atlanta,Ga to Oakland, Ca.  We used their open car trailer and towed it with there truck. But we boxed everything up ourselves and we loaded the truck . Penske had the best prices when we were looking for rentals.

Then I flew back and drove the second car out.

I'm curious if there is a reason why you picked KCK ? I had the unfortunate experience of having to live there for a little over a year. High crime, high taxes and bad neighborhoods. I watched my parents property value drop to almost nothing because the area got so bad. I went to Wyandotte High School my junior year and witnessed two girls get into a bad fight. One girl pulled a short steel pipe out of her purse and hit the other girl across the face. She was knocked out and taken away in a stretcher, I transferred out after that incident. My mother worked at Indian Springs Shopping Center and was almost abducted by gun point in the parking lot.

MIL lives there  good enough ?  Pretty nice neighborhood.

Under different circumstances I would prefer Lawrence or somewhere between KC and Lawrence.

My wife graduated from Turner HS, and she remembers when Indian Springs was new (it is now been demolished). I personally grew up in Hutchinson, but there isn't much out there (or in Wichita) for us. Johnson County maybe a bit more expensive than we can afford right now.

I understand circumstances can determine what direction a person goes. I was just trying to give you some information about the area. The area where my parents lived was nice when they bought their house back in the 70's. By the time I got them out of there in the spring of 2011 it had turned into a crime infested drug area. Property values were so bad we had to sell the house for $25,000.00, it was bought to be turned into a rental. My mother worked at Indian Springs for 26 years, it turned into a dump before being demolished. I forgot to mention I also had a set of wire wheels stolen in broad daylight at Indian Springs. State Ave is one of the main drags which is where I had a gun pointed at me. If you get far enough out towards the race track it's much safer. If you ever get an opportunity to get out of KCK do it while you can. Everything I have told you is what I personally experienced, no exaggerations.
