First time we’d seen that in nearly a month! No, I hadn’t forgotten what it looked or felt like, but I do admit to a weird sort of curiosity… Yep, rain had re-entered the picture, and it was factoring into my ride calculus. I began keeping a watchful eye on things, but right that moment it couldn’t be ruled out that the schedule would be altered somewhat… In fairness, TWC does get it right some of the time. Before turning-in the evening before, I did consult the forecast to see what might be in-store for us, and they had predicted drizzle the following morning… When I'd gone out early to see for myself, there it was! Congrats, TWC. The radar showed no sign of any precip, however, but unless my eyes were playing tricks on me… that drizzle was on again, off again, with no sign of let-up soon. There was a 20-35 percent chance alleged it might continue for pretty much the remainder of the day… Now what should I do? We had managed, however, to work our way out of the frigid temps, at least for the time being. It was twenty-three degrees warmer right then where we were in Uvalde, TX, than it was up in Brownfield, TX, where we’d spent the previous night! The ride the day before had been one of gradual layer reductions throughout the course of the day, and I must say it was nice. No miscalculations resulting in being too cold while out on the road, and no unplanned stops to remedy all the ailments being uncomfortably cold can produce! Something else about that… I do not miss the static discharge when touching metallic objects! Yep, that had become downright annoying on much of this ride, but none since the last morning in really cold stuff! The worst part of it for me is that I forget about it… until… ZAP! The surprise more than anything takes a toll on the nerves of this tender, gentle gypsy… ‘Schedule slippage’ is something that normally has no meaningful impact on us… One day here or there is not a big deal at all, except only that it can mean a day of not riding, and having to do something out of the ordinary about food, snacks, and the like. Rare indeed that multiple days could be ‘slipped’, but that certainly can and has happened. Oh well… However, when it impacts others, well, that is another story entirely… like this time… See, an opportunity to visit ‘super wrench’ for another look at ALI is in the works. She still has that persistent, minor oil drip-age thing going on, and now there is something new… A smallish cooling system leak too. Yep, now there are two wee puddles under our girl each morning instead of just the one. No idea just now if it’s a clamp thing or perhaps the thermostat or something else, but… it is something ‘higher up’ that I can’t check-out here. It will be checked-out soon by ‘experts’, though… depending, of course, upon when we can actually show-up down on the bayou… Troutdude will possibly be ably assisted once again by MitchO, who is rumored to be on his way to the ‘north shore’ for just that purpose. Yeah, Dennis ain’t the only one who enjoys fondling our girl! She enjoys that herself, though, as they can do her far more good than I ever could; and, according to her, they both have soft, warm hands and wonderful bedside manor! To tell the truth, I rather like to observe that threesome myself, as the interplay between them is… ummmm… ‘educational’… Sitting on one’s duff for an entire day or days could be really bothersome, if one were easily bored or hyper-active. For yours truly, these are times for reflection and reminiscing and for occasionally writing about recent events… So, while keeping a vigilant weather-eye out, I began this tale from life on the road... I was standing there alone minding my own business when a local couple started chatting with me… They had a Harley at home, but they were in their SUV then… “Where you headed?” they inquired. “Yuma,” I’d responded… “Why would you go there?” they appeared genuinely curious… “I go there every decade or so to remind myself why I don’t go more often,” I replied with a broad grin. That seemed to satisfy them, and they left to go inside… I find beauty in all things, and I do like to go to places like Yuma now and then to see what my recollection might have neglected to hold onto and to discover what I might have previously overlooked altogether… I was mildly surprised when I arrived! First, even on the ride down there, it had been much more scenic and interesting than I’d remembered, and I was immediately glad we’d made the ride. Funny how ones’ views and perceptions of things can evolve over time, particularly as ones’ familiarity with nuances and details increases. My view of the desert is a classic example! At first, I'd felt it was so foreign, foreboding, and even hostile, that I wasn’t drawn to it at all… Now… I’m quite comfortable down there, and I do enjoy wandering around drinking it all in. There is far more agriculture in that area than I had remembered! WOW! All that dry desert yields miles of green produce when irrigated, and it is amazing to see… Major arteries (channels that divert water from the Colorado River) Smaller arteries (canals spreading the water out further onto the desert floor) Capillaries (Closed pipes delivering water to the sprinkler systems) Fertile fields The ride to Yuma Didn't actually experience rain while on the road there, but... when we arrived in Blythe, CA... Following a brief two-night stay, we rode west from Yuma and into southeastern California... but that's another story... DDT

Bruce, you are correct about the farming around Yuma these days is astounding. My first trip there was in '77 on a Yamaha 750. It has grown steadily, but the last 10 seem to be huge.

Thanks, folks, as always I do appreciate your comments. I've been starting to wonder if perhaps my tales have become a bit stale... The 'Views' and 'Replies' have tapered off, so... Funny about that... While my stories might not be very exciting, I can assure you the adventure itself just keeps getting better! I am absolutely having the time of my life, and I'm mighty glad to be out here living the dream!!!

Bruce, I have never thought any of your tales stale. Quite the opposite, I am always looking forward to the next episode with great anticipation. I enjoyed them even before they had photos. I greatly enjoy the photos too.
I apologize for not commenting more often. My bad. I will try to do better.
Please continue to share your travels and thoughts. Your stories have carried me to places I will probably never see personally. To me your thoughts and musings are a refreshing rarity in a world full of anger and hate.
Keep on doing what you love to do,

+1 what Bigwolf said You are living and expressing your take on the dream that few of us will have the guts ( or even the opportunity) to experience. Its one thing to take some weeks here and there but a whole nuther world to live like Then Came Bronson The only thing better in my eyes is what Hotglue and Flamingobabe have managed to pull off in their recent years on the Spyders You are doing it justice IMHO carry on

Meeting quality folks like you and your family out here is one of the best aspects of my journey... Napper has told me on several occasions that she has met some of the finest people she's ever known through the VRCC... I have to agree with her, as that is certainly the case with this rider, as well!!! There are other really wonderful folks out here, too, and I just can't seem to get enough of... you know... DDT

Keep on keepin on Bruce. I would say that you are still doing a good "job" out there. Hey on the static thing, I found out during the times that it is bad around here that holding a metal object in your hand and touching that door handle with the metal will discharge that static electricity and not hurt nearly as bad as if barehanded. I may pull my multi tool out of the pouch or even a coin or key to make the connection. It seems that the exit point is important.

Bruce,
Right now planning on making Inzane. Wife still seams to be slowly deteriorating and I am very uncomfortable leaving her home alone. Have suggested staying with kids, but, last year said she would rather spend the time with me on the road. So, may cage it again. It is all good. See friends plus spend quality time with the wife.

Yeah, I remember y'all doing that last year. Sounds like a good thing for the two of you, so drive on!!! I'll look forward to seeing you both, then, in Roanoke...

Terry,
Sounds like some solid advice! I'll give that a try next time I find myself muttering obscenities under my breath while my hair is standing up... How about y'all? Going to IZ?

FB, Yep, that Quality Inn in Deming is very familiar to me... I've stayed there many, many times over the years... more than twenty, as a matter of fact. It was a Holiday Inn for the first several times I stayed there, then it changed to Quality Inn a few years back. It not only is convenient for my travels, I do enjoy the 'Lazy Lizard' for libation and entertainment! Over the years I've seen many interesting characters in there, including one visit where I watched as two WWII vets chatted... One had been an American pilot, the other had been a German pilot! These former adversaries had a fascinating conversation, and I got to be the proverbial 'fly on the wall'. Yep, more than a few brain cells from the ol' bug slayer have been strewn about in there! I agree with you on Fort Stockton and the motels there! I used to stay there, but the last several times through, I either stop in Junction or press on to Van Horn... when I take I-10, that is. More often than not I take US HWY 90 through Del Rio. Yeah, it was a bit cool out there when we were riding about! Sorry I missed y'all... we could have shared some war stories of our own while we shivered together! DDT Dan, I appreciate the suggestions, my friend... but... I only rarely ever stop at 'must see' attractions any more. Mostly I just ride, drink in the scenery and think... I used to visit those places, but somewhere along the way the 'need' evaporated, along with my interest. All good places worth seeing, I'm sure, but... you know... Several years ago I stopped being a 'tourist' and focused entirely upon becoming what I call a 'spiritual pilgrim'. My journey is more about discovering things other than physical places... It's about understanding things regarding the workings of the heart and mind, and not just viewing the visible sights, as interesting as those places are... My quest has been to find some semblance of acceptance, contentment, and in the end, hopefully, peace. I search for a way to gain an approving conscience, and that requires deciding for myself what is 'the right thing to do' in all things. Sight-seeing is a worthwhile pursuit... I just happen to be on a different one... DDT

Exactly why I've all but stopped putting ride reports on here ( we had a awesome ride yesterday ) . You go through the song and dance to add photos maybe some history of the locations it all takes time to add to the report and maybe get 3 or 4 comments . Let someone post some political bullshit and 3/4 of the people on this site will jump in . I always enjoy the read Bruce and effort of adding pictures .

Wayne, Thanks, amigo! You know I'm not a particularly good 'care-giver', but you also know I happen to be friends with some of the best! Fortunately for 'our girl', those goodwrenches are willing and able to ensure she gets great care!!! It's good to hear from you, my friend. You are one of those largely unheralded good folks that make a difference in this world... I do appreciate ya dude, and I'm sincerely glad I've had an opportunity to glimpse how you quietly go about making that difference! Not for fanfare or recognition, simply doing good for the sake of doing good. DDT Joe, Thanks, my very good friend... Yes, there is sure to be disappointment if one does this seeking any form of 'reward'... Your ride reports have long been the benchmark by which the rest have been measured... And, yes, they never attract the kind of attention political posts seem to... oh well. Can't argue with 'customer feedback', though, so we content ourselves with our lot. I'm glad you like the photos! One of the primary reasons I bother is because of the urging from you... Yep, and your efforts to hook me up with Facebook convinced me that I was somehow going to have to find a way to include those. Facebook did not work out, but with the help of troutdude and Serk, I finally did find a way to include them here... I'm glad you had a good ride yesterday... I knew you would, as all of yours seem to turnout that way! I miss riding with my Hillbilly riding pals, and I hope to join y'all again... when the roads recover from 'winter conditioning' and the temp climbs a bit higher! I ain't nearly as tough as all y'all are! DDT Robin, Ironic, huh?!! To get scolded for complaining about political posts, as many others have done, but when those and their controversies, and especially the complaints about politicians and politics generally, do seem to garner the most attention! Best for me to just avoid them altogether... and bite my tongue! DDT

Bruce, As I told you on that Sunday morning we had breakfast in Bryan,OH, about the only reason I come to this board anymore is to read your posts about the adventures I would like to be doing too. You don't see me respond very often to your writings because I'm just kind of a quiet person. If I was in a room with you and several others and you were telling about a ride or a day in one of your rides, I may not have much to say but rather just listen and absorb what you are saying. Same goes here. I read just about everything you post but I don't feel compelled to respond to posts very often. I just read and absorb. On the other hand, many of my posts over the years have been to simply help or offer advice to people with questions about something I may know about or be able to help. Many of those posts haven't been well received so these days I just visit the board and read. Yes, your ride reports are being read(by me), I'm just off in a corner enjoying them.

Comments are nice but I do not post for comments at all. I posted my Alaska trip just because I wanted to record it and all the fun I had for memories. It took tons of time every night to blog it all and upload the pics and out in the Yukon in some places the internet was terrible. I posted link here to the blog with all the pics. I am glad I did it and its still there. Had some inquiries as to my route and even had some who asked if they could share the link. I like it when people post their rides and the # of viewers on your post should say something. There are a lot of viewers on here that do not post much at all for whatever reason. None of it bothers me much as I pretty much do my own thing and enjoy what I do. I like it here,, political posts and all. If it were gone I would miss it and all those I have met here. Just my 2 cents worth.

Bruce, Although I don't always reply I enjoy reading your posts. I no longer will post any stories about riding since I have no new riding 'adventures' .
Between you and Smokin' Joe, both of your posts are why I keep coming back to read them.
I'm still writing stories and i'm now an Allen county Indiana editor for a new magazine called At Home, Indiana" It's a folksy mag with stories on happenings occurring in Indiana.
I write a story now and then for the"Lake Effect Miata Club' (I'm a member), and they seem to be well received but they are not motorcycle stories.

I usually get on the board after everyone else has commented so I don't have much to add. I'm retiring soon so that may change I do really enjoy you posts so please don't stop! Looking forward to seeing you in VA! Tommy

Please continue with your writing efforts, I enjoy reading them even though I often don't post my appreciation. My fault. I'll try to nudge that into my limited memory files. Nice pics! Looking forward to visiting with you and all my other Valkyrie friends as soon as possible. Note to self. Observe and watch Mitch and trout dude closely when they are looking at my Valkyrie!!! Rams

i also do not always reply. I do enjoy reading all of your stories. Don't give up just because someone does not post. I'll do my part to reply from now on, apparently that is what it takes for some to feel their post was worth the effort. I do not get to go on many long rides because of the kids and work and just life in general and it is nice to read about those who do get to do it more often.
