In reading about it, they are saying 10 billion for a 199 mile section of the project.

PFFFFT... the New York Times just did a series on the NYC Subway. A new "East Side Access" is costing 3.5 BILLION a MILE!

From the article:

"The estimated cost of the Long Island Rail Road project, known as “East Side Access,” has ballooned to $12 billion, or nearly $3.5 billion for each new mile of track — seven times the average elsewhere in the world. The recently completed Second Avenue subway on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and the 2015 extension of the No. 7 line to Hudson Yards also cost far above average, at $2.5 billion and $1.5 billion per mile, respectively."

ok not exactly the same as trains and subways but, down the street from me is an old bridge built in the '50's or something which county engineers decided needs to be replaced.

it's a very small bridge sitting over the back end of a body of water leading to an adjacent river, it's a very low bridge and about 130' overall.

the cost is almost $5 million and will take almost 2 years to complete. for the majority of the destruction and destruction the bridge will be out of commission, not useable. Now for the kicker, it will be 20' shorter in overall length. No one from the building dept has returned my email asking how the bridge can be 20' shorter when completed.

I'll take a guess. They will extend and raise the respective shorelines at the roadway approach to the bridge so the completed bridge will be higher and ultimately shorter than the original.

Broken link?

Personally, I would rather spend money building new dams and reservoirs (we need water in California) and maintaining the roads we already have.
