Niece asked me to replace two toilets in her new (to her) 20+ year old home. Interested in trying one of those wax less rings (Danco, Korky, Fluidmaster, Sani-Seal etc) and looking for feedback on which you would recommend or anything else for that matter. I haven't seen the old ones (not even sure if they are original to the home or replacements by previous owner) or removed them yet so not sure what I'll be dealing with (floor level, below floor or above floor). Not real good at using the wax ones and hoping one of these could make the job easier. Any thoughts / ideas / tips ???

I'm definitely not a plumber, but I replaced a toilet about a year ago, and looked into the waxless seals. Saw lots of bad reviews of them and chose to go with a old faithful (But admittedly icky) wax seal... Will fully defer to anyone more knowledgeable in the field than myself in the field, which would be just about anyone...  |

Me and the wax seals didnt seem to get along so well so I bought the waxless and they do pretty good. I have installed a few toilets with them and they offer a really good seal, compensate for small discrepancies with height and maybe not aligning 100 percent straight. I will find the ones I have used since I bought a couple of extras and post it. This is the one I have used and it works well. https://www.danco.com/product/perfect-seal-toilet-wax-ring/The patented seal design combines specially designed rubber gaskets with encapsulated wax to form a seal that is three times stronger than a wax ring without the mess. Yes they are harder to cleanup before install the new seal.
But they last longer and have fewer leaks.

I stay with wax. It's old school but proven. Never had to uninstall one due to a problem with the seal. And even if a bit messier, how often do you have to change a toilet? Only once in the current casa since 96, and that was because the contractor installed a too-cheap toilet in the new powder room. I'm about to upgrade one of the old toilets in the main upstairs bath, before company comes - will be wax.

Use the synthetic kind. You can try to go darkside but I don't know if car tires are made small enough for this application. Careful on the install as you don't want to hydrolock the toilet so be sure the petcoc...watervalve is in the off position till the job is complete. A hydrolocked toilet is bad and can lead to a sh*t storm of problems. Bolt it down to manufacture's specs as you don't want a cracked head either. Good Luck! (Can't resist a good straight line sorry  ) |

FWIW....right now I'm leaning towards the Danco with the built in wax seal but I think I have until sometime this spring before I need to make a final decision. So, my mind can will probably change at least a dozen more times in the meantime.

use the wax seal and set the toilet straight down on top of it and you will not have any problems for years to come...use a scraper about 1 inch wide and a roll of paper towels to wipe the wax off the scraper with..i have changed hundreds of toilets and no problems yet with the old faithfulls

Extra thick wax style is my choice. Height of the floor flange is the main culprit being to low and/or improper alignment during installation the extra thick usually make up for these two flaws. They do make flange spacers to accommodate too low of flange height but be careful of over torqueing as they are fragile.

Tnx Jess.....you happen to be driving through Michigan anytime this spring??? I doubt i will be in michigan, i went there in 76 and the silver dome caved in frrom all the snow and it snowed july 4th in marquette,,,i dont do cold very well |
