It is a good two-lane highway that will get you expeditiously across southern Idaho without traveling on I-84, except for the 45 miles between Boise and Mountain Home.  All but 15 miles of that can also be avoided by using a section of old SH 30.  While much of southern Idaho cannot be considered very scenic, SH 20 is arguably an improvement over the interstate.  It is how I would go, but I don't like running the interstate at 80+ mph.

Hey Robin consider 12 all the way up lolo pass (stop for the night in Missoula its maybe 20 miles out of the way and they have not only lots of hotels but also a Hooters there for you lol then back down 12 to 93 south to 38 east and 1 east

They will keep you off interstates except the last hour or so and its stunning country out there   You will be climbing the entire way from the beginning of 12 to Lolo.

Consider a brief visit to Stonehenge
http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/visit/stonehenge-memorial
on the Washington Side before you get to 12 , pretty neat place

You will see thousands of windmill turbines on both sides of the gorge and can expect some gusty kicks from behind as you ride east around the cuts in the river gorge.  A great experience.  Enjoy your retirement

Robin, what Oss and Dan said. Route 12 is hard to beat. Jane and I ran it from Walla Walla Washington to Missoula Montana. It follows the Snake river, The Clearwater river, and the Lochsa river for at least 250 miles. Beautiful ride, up hill all the way. Check it out on Google maps street view.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

On 20 from Rexburg to west Yellowstone it is very busy. It was a new paved road in 2016. Lot of boats and campers flying up the road. Once in YS it will take about 2-3 hr to cody. Id come into YS and head NE to Cook City MT for the night. Then take Chief Joseph HWY into Cody. Stay on main st in Cody, easy walking to stuff. Irma Hotel is historic if your into that. Cody Motor Lodge is nice to. I think I have spent 5-7 days in Cody. Its a must. Mexican place has great margaritas.

Cody is a must. July 4 is national rodeo, cowboys everywhere.  Motor Lodge is where the real bikers (high mileage torturers riders) hang. LARGE times there, shootouts in the street, makes me feel right at home.  uglystupid2

Not in a big hurry to go back, though. Had the Cody SWAT Team come down on me last time I was there. No crap.   coolsmiley

Changed my direction and now running RT 12 through LO LO Pass to Missoula  and then to Driggs for the night and then through the park to Cody at least that's the plan.
