The Coyote Principle
CALIFORNIA
• The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor's dog, then bites the Governor.
• The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie "Bambi" and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural.
• He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the state $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it.
• He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases.
• The Governor goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged.
• The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is now free of dangerous animals.
• The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for residents of the area.
• The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world.
• The Governor's security agent is fired for not stopping the attack. The state spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with additional special training for the nature of coyotes.
• PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million suit against the state.

TEXAS
• The Governor of Texas is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks his dog.
• The Governor shoots the coyote with his state-issued pistol and keeps jogging. The Governor has spent $.50 on a .45 ACP hollow point cartridge.
• The buzzards eat the dead coyote.

And that, my friends, is why California is broke and Texas is not.

Eventually a lot of Californian's even can't take it.

So they're all moving to Colorado.  Ask Mark about it.

We should be able to institute some kind of quarantine.

It's like a virus.                    (of course there's lots of good folk in CA, just not enough)

In the Republic of Milwaukee there have been numerous coyote attacks on dog walkers (the dogs, not the people). The DNR and the civic animal control department are recommending tagging and studying the habits of these coyotes. This in a state that the coyote is fair game year round, the coyote population is breeding with the reintroduced grey wolf to produce a larger, more aggressive coyote and the state has a $3 billion hunting industry.. The bureaucratic mind at work to spend the peoples money wisely. (Where is that sarcasm font when you need it?) One outraged elder lady that had her Yorkie used as an evening snack wanted to know if there was a reason the coyotes couldn't be exterminated and was told it was not legal to discharge a firearm in the city and the coyotes would be tagged for further study. Her comments left little doubt that she was planning on taking her tax money elsewhere and using her second amendment rights on vermin that might eat her next pet.

You hear them howling a lot at night around here but it's very rare to actually see them.  Even on a full moon night when sitting out in the hot tub - and we have a good view out the back.  Well a hundred yds due East; 550 to the SE.

I have a varmint rifle in .223 set up with bull barrel, JPE trigger, bipod, Magpul furniture and Nikon BDC scope out to 800 yds.  But actually getting a shot - very unlikely.

And btw, this is actually closer to reality than you think:

Ruger even came out with a special edition of their 380 pistol to commemorate the event:

That's a farce though. No real Texan would carry that little plastic, sub-caliber pea shooter.

This thread has wandered, and I'm confused.  Are we talking about coyotes or (migrating) Californians?   Grin Shocked Roll Eyes
