cooldude All the way Mark.  cooldude

Man we have not had a republican federal senator (or governor) in a long time here in VA.

I'm not sure if it's even possible ever again.  I do my part.

It's not the politics mind you, it's the outstanding vote buying programs of the opposition.

If we could push the Nothern suburbs of DC into Maryland, VA would be solid red. Sure hope we can replace Kaine. Never have liked him.

Tim Kaine was a POS as a governor and an even bigger POS Senator.

I would love to see him voted out.

Yes.  What we need is the original survey for DC, which included a big chunk of VA (roughly Arlington County), and cede it back to DC.  (In 1846, the area of 31 square miles which had originally been ceded by VA to be part of DC, was returned to VA.  This was all a big mistake and should be remedied.)  At the same time, we resist every attempt to give DC statehood at all costs (which would be a disaster), forever.  Of course the national capital should never be in a single state.

Then donate Loudoun and Fairfax Counties to MD.

This would be a huge loss to VA in both tax revenue and socialists.   cooldude

And worth every penny.

(But then I would have to move, because I'm not living in MD under any circumstances.)

This is off the subject of Tim Kaines election in 2018. But I’ve never understood how people are ok with the citizens of D.C. not having voting representation in Congress ?

For the same reason citizens of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa don't have voting representatives in Congress. They're not US states, and representatives are based on statehood.

Yes, I understand it’s not a state. What I meant was, being that it was in existence since the birth of our country why are people against them becoming a state or have represented rights ? Our territories are a little easier to understand.

Serk,
Correct me if I'm wrong but, wasn't it determined from the very beginning that DC would not be nor ever become a state?   So, why would anyone who choses to live in DC expect to be represented in Congress?   Is anyone holding a non-assualt weapon to their heads holding them there?

If I didn't like living in KY, I most surely would be looking to go somewhere else...............  Shrug

The people of W D.C. have a representative in the House.  He doesn't vote on the Floor but can certainly discuss with and influence the reps from states.

I think it is more correct to say that when the House doesn't want the DC rep vote, they invoke "Committee of the Whole", which eliminates the DC rep from voting on an issue.

And I agree - if having a House rep and 2 Senators is so important - move to VA or MD. When I lived in the area, I was in Reston (Fairfax county), close enough to Loudon county if we wanted to go there for something.

Understood. I'm sure I learned about it in American History, but that was many years ago. It just seems odd that some people are good with them not having full representation. I doubt lobbyists, fellow congressmen give them much countenance . Without an actual vote they really have little pull. But my real question is why some are glad the residents have no representation ?

Mostly it's to annoy you.   Wink  What do you believe the people of D.C. are missing out on because of there representative's not voting on Floor issues?  It's a well kept city with the same benefits that everyone in the rest of the country gets.

From the beginning Washington D.C. was intended to be the seat of national government and the residence of the government representatives,  bureaucrats, and employees.  The government has grown.  The city has grown.  The businesses not only those supporting the D.C. population but others are more than what was envisioned.  Should we change how we treat the seat of federal government or should we establish requirements for being a resident of D.C.?

Honestly there are several states that I would be happy to have no voting representation.   Smiley

I can show you a map of the states that I believe have shown themselves to be too irresponsible to have voting powers... Wink

I'm sure Mr. Head could show one that would look like a photo-inverse of my map too...

2funny actually, I hadn't even thought about before until reading this thread. (I can also think of some states I'd be happy to have no voting representation) just kidding, I'm good with everybody having a voice, regardless of how misguided they may be.  coolsmiley

Actually, I don't think we should exclude all the states that one or another believes have gone amiss in any one election.

In fairness I think we should sit down to negotiations and do it fairly.  We should get to identify seven states that we will exclude and the meathead will get the same number that he will exclude.  We should very easily come to an agreement.

DC is the epitome of the free sh!t army system gone wrong.  Generations living entirely on G welfare, and the system gamed to the max.  Pride in fathering 10 kids with different mothers, and no support for any kids given, or even acknowledged.  DC govt (not the fed) among the most corrupt anywhere with public servants taking the public treasury home with them whenever possible.  Among the highest taxes anywhere to make up the difference.  Before Chicago started being the perpetual winner, DC was the murder capital of the US, off and on, for 20+ years.

If given statehood, there would likely be not a single red vote anywhere in the District.  And the very first thing they would do, is levy a terrible additional state income tax on the hundreds of thousands of federal employees who live in VA, WV, and MD (all of whom already pay healthy state income taxes) (like 20%).  And there would be no way around it, but to get different employment, or try to transfer to a non DC fed job (impossible for that many).

DC can never ever be allowed to be a State.  Just like Puerto Rico and Guam and USVI, and any other corrupt, perpetually mismanaged socialist run territories of the US.  And just a history lesson;  you'll note we have had many Democrat majority congresses over the last 150 years, and none of them ever gave DC statehood either.

The best idea on the whole subject is to move the US capital to a small chunk of middle America somewhere, and give DC back to MD (and watch MD holler because it's just a money pit with no return).  This would go a long way toward disrupting the historical DC beltway bandit, lobbyist, military industrial complex corruption extant in this area for a century or two.  And kick the UN out of NY (and the US) while you're at it.
