Got it off but hesitate to remove fittingsthought I read some time back about applying a vacuum somewhere to drain the last bit??

Run the tank down low. Remove it and set it on a bench with the back raised up. Remove the petcock and lower the hole over a catch basin. That will empty it completely.

With the OEM fuel petkock, I put it on reserve and apply a very small vacuum using a brake bleeder.  That also tests the function of the petkock.  But removing the petkock is no big deal, just be aware that the filter screen will probably stay in the tank...
