I have a spare pumpkin that needs a final gear set # 6 in the above graphic.

Can anyone tell me if I can reuse the pinion gear shim #17 and ring gear spacer #19 or do I have to spec them out and get new, possibly different sizes?

I don't need a pumpkin now, but this one is just a boat anchor and I figure I might as well explore rebuilding it.

Any suggestions?

I refurbished two.

I bought 1500 wing finals that had good splines. I also got 1500 wing flanges
that were perfect, from a trike builder. Good 1500 wing finals  and flanges can be had
cheap on ebay, or maybe there's a trike builder near you with a pile of them.

If you take the ring gear (the part with the worn splines) out of your Valkyrie
and take the ring rear out of the 1500 final, you can press out the good splines
from the 1500 wing and press them into your Valkyrie ring gear.

The motivation for doing it this way is twofold:

 - cheap

 - low skill level needed

If you reuse the original Valkyrie ring gear (with the newly pressed in splines)
you probably won't have to worry about the shims or anything - just minimal
disassembly and slap back in the same old ring gear.  Rebuilding a
Valkyrie final with new parts surely isn't as complex as rebuilding a car's
automatic transmission, but still...

If you get item #6, be aware that it does not come with item #14. Not sure how difficult it is to have that removed from your old assembly. If you go the gw1500 route, the big bearing and spacer needs to be removed from the ring gear assembly before the spline hub is pressed out. Reuse the Valk bearing and spacer. The GW spacer is usually thicker and can affect the backlash on reassembly.

Ahhh, Cool, thanks Mike cooldude cooldude

Off to e-bay. Smiley

I bet doing a auto tranny is the same, just takes experience.

Maybe wreck a couple getting it though Cheesy

Thanks for the tips indybobm.

I'm going to track down the parts and I'm sure I'll be back asking for more guidance. Roll Eyes
