So bikes been sitting all winter (Mich).Have been keeping a good charge in the battery though out the winter months. Uncover and turn gas valve on,set the choke, hit the buttom and she cranks and cranks but no start (not unusual for setting all winter). Wait a minute and try again (no start).Let set a minute again and hit the button, she's cranking and cranking then no crank and just a buzzing/rattle sound from right side cover. I think that maybe the connections maybe corroded or loose.Clean the plug connector to the solenoid, try starting again, nope, just the solenoid buzzing.Check battery ground on the back side of the engine near altenator, its tight and clean.Check voltage with my VOM 15v's at the battery and at the solenoid Batt connection.Checking voltage at the other side of the solenoid while trying to start, the voltage drops of to almost nothing???  1997 Standard. Any ideas guys?  Thanks

You stated that the battery post (B) on the solenoid has good voltage. The other copper post, the starter motor post (M), is connected to the positive battery terminal for the duration that you press in the start button, so it should read battery voltage. Since you're getting almost no volts at that post, the internal contacts in the starter relay might be carbon fouled ..... after 20-years of service. Try bridging the two copper posts with a heavy duty wire or a jumper cable.

Ron.I thought the same as you.I had taken the two allen head bolts from the two leads at the relay and touched the leads  together to feed the starter but did nothing but spark. As far as the battety,i just checked voltage again (16v's at battery with charger attached) same V'S at "B" term. of relay.Hold my tester lead on the "M" term. of the relay and get .22 V'S.After conducting this test several times,i get very very weak voltage at the "B" term.,then rechecked voltage at the battery and got .22 volts. So i'm now leaning toward the battery because it drained so quickly even with 10amp charger attached. Sad  Guess i'll take the battery in and have it load tested and probably end up buying a new one.Thank you all for your input on this.I know that the VRCC bunch is the best! I've been around ( member #625) since almost day one but haven't been on here in along time(work time high free time almost 0)Now retired and maybe can spend a little more time here Smiley Thanks for the help once again guys! Will let you know what shakes out with this "No Start" deal - Dan

Update: Took battery in and had it checked.Said he couldn't really tell (boarder line between good and bad).Bought a new one (85 bucks) took it home, hooked it up,turned the key,hit the button and no rattle/buzz at the relay, but, only heard the starter whine (engine not turning over),man i'm now thinking "HYDRO LOCK! I walk around to the right side to look at connections again.Standing there staring at the electrical....then my eyes looked at the valve cover.....Whoa,i had forgotten  to re-install the spark plugs i had taken out yesterday to relieve compression while trying to get it to crank! Whew!! Put plugs back in,and life is good once again! Thank you guys for your help. Now if it only would  warn up outside just a little more.  cooldude

Good job.  Ya, even with a new battery you will tend to need the spark plugs for the motor to start.  May take you a while to live that one down, but glad you are up and running.
