They can be polished, I bet it is hard... Grumpy used to do it...

I refurbished a couple of final drives and painted them...

You need to bend those sticky out rebars out of the way. Accident waiting to happen if Joe visits.

not rebars, those are metal rods to hold together the wooden forms that were used to pour the concrete walls. They break off easily, fastest way turning them with a pipe wrench, but possibly retained should the walls be built taller later, or sumpthin.

I think the housing has to be absolutely empty. The toughest item to remove would probably be the pinion snout bearing.
