Long story short....she fell in the bathroom and broke her right hip. Agony like I've not seen in a person is some time and when it's your loved one it tears you up inside. So, by the time we were done with the ER and being admitted, testing and xrays, talking to specialists, etc., I have now been up from 8:00am Wednesday and will be until later tonight. They finally convinced her of the need for an operation which is basically a hip replacement that doesn't include the socket. I'm going back up there around 8:30-9:00 pm this evening which will be about the time she's back in her room. Her son from St. Pete is there now so I can get a break, just don't dare sleep or I'll never wake up until tomorrow.

Best thoughts for Rita, and you too John.  My Mom fell shortly after going into a nursing home 3 1/2 years ago.  Thank goodness she only fractured her hip and they put three screws into it to stabilize.  She is still in a wheelchair or in bed all the time but a couple of times she thought she could walk and fell.  Thanks goodness nothing else was broken.
I hope they can give her back some mobility and be pain free.

Just got home, the dr. was pleased with the results, said everything went textbook. Tonight she rests, tomorrow they have her up and moving that leg. She was still pretty groggy when I first got back up to her room about 8:30pm, but when I left about half hour ago she was awake and talking, albeit rather softly....doesn't have a strong voice any longer. She was coming out of the strong stuff given during the operation so the nurse hit her up with a small dose of pain meds to start with, will increase as needed but wanted to start slow and build it up if she can handle it. They take her off hospice during this and the following rehab, then reinstate it after that's done. I got the bathroom floor cleaned up pretty good but the bed sheets....oh my! Covered it up so I can sleep on the bed tonight and will change things tomorrow, too tired tonight. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, I have a feeling the days are going to get longer for a while.

Ahh, John.....So sorry to read this. Best of luck to Rita from both Lesa and I. We will certainly pray for strength for the both of you.
Like others have said, if you need anything please call us.
We have been there as well with Lesa's mom breaking a hip around 18 months ago and her other leg around 8 months ago. Know what you are going through.

Hey John....what's the update on Rita? Fingers crossed for a good one.
Not very good, still a lot of pain, they're trying to move her out of the hospital to a nursing facility for rehab, said I need to make a decision on where. I reminded them they gave me the list of such places Friday evening, it's now the weekend and there is nobody available until Monday to talk with at any of the locations. The case worker got a bit pissy about it so I suggested maybe I need an attorney present at our next meeting. She then mentioned she doesn't have a medical issue going on, that's when I stood up and got a little loud. She backed off.

The results of the CT scan used to ID the broken hip also divulged what appears to be possibly a cancer spot on one vertebrae. Rita said if so, she's not going to pursue treatment at this stage of the game. It's getting a bit difficult.

Hey JOhn.....how's she doing? And how are YOU doing?
She hates being where she is but a lot of it is unfamiliarity with surroundings....and being alone. She hates it when I leave, tough situation. She does seem to be getting stronger which is encouraging, doing a bit of walking with a walker, sitting up in the wheelchair. Small victories but important ones. I had a run in with one of the CNA's last night, she's originally from Jamaica. Speaks very rough and hard to understand, is fast and rough with the patients and I caught her with Rita. Rita was trying to tell her something and she kept talking over her, doing what she wanted and yanking the sheets around, various irritating moves. I stopped her, tried to talk to her but she wouldn't shut up, kept talking over me. I stood up and got right in front of her, told her she needs to shut her mouth and listen to her patients, and slow down. She quickly told me she's not used to being spoken to in such a manner and if I did it again she'd slap me. Wrong move! First I told her if she made that mistake that I would respond in kind. I then called the nurse supervisor in, filled her in with what had happened and the threat. The supervisor told her to go home and they would deal with her Monday morning. The super apologized and sent a different gal to take over. Rita was happy with her so I was satisfied. In general the staff is very accommodating, 100 times better than the facility she was in during Jan./Feb. of 2017.

I seem to be tired most of the time, the day is centered around a lot of running back/forth to the nursing home. The people taking care of her are good to her with few exceptions. After a run-in with a couple members of the staff, things took a change. Her daughter Tracey will jump down their throat at the drop of a hat so when she was around things moved smoothly. They want to discharge her at the end of next week, around July 6, but I doubt she will be ready. I'm a bit curious as to what's behind them wanting to get her out so quick so plan to ask some rather pointed questions this Tueday in a staff meeting.

Agreed, I've been hitting the gym 3 times a week since she's been in the "home." It had been 6 mo. since I'd been in there so the first couple visits were a bit tough to handle. Hot shower and good night's rest made a difference.

She is walking more, therapists are making her get up and dressed, go to the dining room and mingle during lunch. They also insist she no longer use the bedpan during the day...she didn't argue that point at all. They're talking about discharging her around the end of next week. We'll probably have to hire a helper for a couple weeks, bathroom issues aren't quite up to par yet and she doesn't want me to continue to have to help her on that.
