It looks like I need a new neutral safety switch, but according to Honda they're on national back order. Is there any way to bypass that switch temporarily?

Edit: Or does anyone have a working one they can part with?

You should be able to start the bike in gear by pulling in the clutch lever. That is, if the sidestand is not done. If you cannot start it by pulling in the clutch lever (should hear a slight click at the lever switch) you might have other problems.

If you still want to bypass it after what Indy said you can take the light green/red wire that goes to the neutral switch and ground it.

Your clutch lever may not be actuating the switch to allow you to start in gear by pulling in the clutch.  Your clutch lever pivot bushing may have worn out of round.  New lever will fix, or put a dab of jb weld on the point of contact to allow it to reach the switch...

Not to highjack jc’s post, but I’m having a problem with my switch also. Where is the neutral switch, mine works sometimes. Can it be cleaned or should I just replace.

Or just replace the bushing....

My second plug for Dag's website today. Download the 450 page shop manual for free here.

Don't know about cleaning versus replacement.

Trying to solve this issue has taken me a while. When it started acting up--key on, in neutral, lights come on, but no start--I immediately thought starter button. Cleaned that, then ended up with a new battery, new starter solenoid, checked all fuses, tested clutch and neutral safety switch. Everything checked out good. I did find that periodically it would start, so when I would ride it the neutral light would come on while riding down the road. So even though it tested OK I thought I should replace it.

After posting this, I found one on Ebay and ordered it. But then for some reason I decided to check the bank angle sensor. I found when starting the search that one of the four relays (I have an I/S) behind the left side cover was dangling down instead of being seated on its post. Sure enough it was for the bank angle sensor and it had filled with road debris. I cleaned it and tested it and it was no good. Had a spare, installed it and the bike started right up.

So...I have a used neutral safety switch to add to the parts bin. Thanks all for the help.
