I have a '97 Valk Tourer with 6 into 6 Cobra exhaust, not jetted. A few times recently I've had to give her full throttle to get to the head of a group ride to let the lead rider know I needed gas or whatever. A couple of my friends said they smelled raw fuel when I blew by them. Mind you I did have the throttle cracked wide open. Normal or not?

No one ever told me they smelled gas when I had the Cobras on. Mine did run rich until I changed OEM air filter to K&N

I have been told that in the past, When the float level was out, if I did some low rev travel for a while it would start to flood a little and those following could smell petrol

My bike is still rich mid revs but I have not been told it smells of raw petrol for a while.....but it may still at times?

Float level is a possibility. I did what you did when you rebuilt your carbs though...used the K&L float needles.  I am leaning toward just putting this bike back to stock. The pipes sound good but that's about it as far as any type of advantage. They pop on decel, turn blue, drone on long rides, introduced a noticeable power loss, and now this with the fuel.

Maybe adjust your air / mixture screw out some, to lean it out.

Thanks guys, problem solved. Anyone looking for new-ish Cobra pipes in excellent condition. Smiley As a side note, now that I can actually hear the engine, I need to do a valve adjustment. Lol

Was asking at how many miles on the tank before the need to pass to let others know you needed fuel.

I am looking for gas at 140 miles. I can go over 150 on a tank though. I have noticed better gas mileage on non-ethanol fuel as well.

I would say it was pretty normal then my '97 will go about 130 before reserve.
