Gentlemen,

The p/o converted my valk to a supervalk, complete with tourer side rails. I need to convert her back for a vacation ride with the mrs. I have already removed the seat and bags, is there anything I should know before taking the top shock mounts off? the bike is on the side stand now, will I need to raise it to full height now or do you think I can compress the shocks without lowering the tire? If I do one side at a time will I be able to do this without a lift? Thanks for the info!

I never tried removing the shocks without using a lift.  I would think if you did one side at a time it might work.

I’ve done it on the side stand...not the best way but can be done.

Do one side at a time.  It helps to have a second person.  You can put the lower shock mount on, then lift the rear of the bike by the frame (not the fender!) and slide the top mount on.  It also helps to lube the rubber inserts with silicone grease or equivalent.

The second person should steady the bike so it doesn’t push over when installing the shocks.

Good luck...this is my experience only and I don’t endorse or guarantee anything...do at your own risk.  It’s really not difficult to do.  I installed my Progressive 440s by myself on the side stand.

Thanks Guys,

There is a lot more work involved with the full "conversion" vs leaving the stock side rails on, but the tourer rails look so nice!!! We will see how long it stays in dresser mode.... Undecided

Be careful when removing the two bolts that hold the rails on...  With both removed, it is a b!T@h to line everything back up, when putting the Interstate rails back on  tickedoff

Not if you jack th bike from center it is no problem....if you do it on the side stand it will be a bitch.

Use a file or grinder to grind a taper on the threaded end of the bolt that bolts through the  rails. Now when you try to align all the parts you just apply a pushing force as you turn the bolt . The taper will help to align everything as you tighten the bolt. Works like a charm   cooldude cooldude

Thanks to everyone for the info.  I will run some stabilizer ropes to the ceiling and use the floor jack and 2x10 to lift the bike up!
