Mexico has just elected a new President.

“The core promises of Mr. López Obrador’s campaign — to end corruption, reduce violence and address Mexico’s endemic poverty — were immensely popular with voters, but they come with questions he and his new government may struggle to answer.

How he will pay for his ambitious slate of social programs without overspending and harming the economy? How will he rid the government of bad actors when some of those same people were a part of his campaign? Can he make a dent in the unyielding violence of the drug war, which left Mexico with more homicides last year than any time in the last two decades?

And how will Mr. López Obrador, a firebrand with a tendency to dismiss his critics in the media and elsewhere, govern?

In the end, the nation’s desire for change outweighed any of the misgivings the candidate inspired.”

Sounds eerily similar to what happened here a year and a half ago. Populism seems to be on the rise.

Since he's a full blown socialist, and socialism makes Utopian paradises here on Earth, then this is good news, that means there will no longer be any illegals trying to sneak into our country, right?

Heck, maybe we won't even need to build a wall, Mexico will probably start on building their own to keep us US Citizens out!

(Until it starts being used to keep the slave labor inside the Mexican nation wide death camp that a socialist system inevitably devolves in to, of course.)

It amazes me that people who have never cut business deals or run a company criticize those that have. You have to deal with all kinds of people and need to get sizing them up out of the way fast. Most of the time people are only in it for what they can get out of it, so it can make keeping the deal straight hard.

Not including present company in this statement.

I wonder who would be a better person to run a country a person with a pussy hat on or one with extensive business experience

This was the reason I like Trump, the founders were not carer politicians they were business men and government was only for providing limited services.

We have not till Trump had a real businessman in office most have done nothing in their life and now they are managing a country.

When you cant manage your own life how can you criticize someone who runs a country.

Time will tell if Mexico made the correct decision and hopefully the pres will get a handle on the corruption there along with buying himself an armor plated transport.

The founding fathers believe as you stated above.  They never envisioned a "career" politician.  The believed that the voters would vote for the best man for the job at hand.  He would serve, leaving his business/work behind to serve the people as needed.

Congress would work, make new laws or not and then, after some finite time, its members would return to live and work under those same laws.

There was a British TV (BBC) series many years ago about their government.  One of the underlying themes (well it was stated outright) was that no matter who the Prime Minister was, the people under him really ran the government and made all the decisions.  AKA The Swamp.

I would truly like to see Term Limits, but worry that The Swamp would be further empowered in that case.

It appears to me that the "people" are tired of corrupt government and corrupt politicians and are trying to correct the issue through the current system.

If remains to be seen if the elections of 2016 (US) and 2018 (Mexico) will accomplish that. Many have serious doubts about the Mexican election. And yes I am sure some have doubts about the US election.

Time and actions will answer both questions.

I think that the US founding fathers were politically astute and never intended for there to be a political class in the US. They were right and we need to get back to that position.

Politics is a FOUR letter word. So corruption in politics and government must end and be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Politics as a profession needs to end.

You believe a far left Socialist is the same as a capitalist? Wow.

Trump was elected by those who want less govt.

Mexico elected one who wants total govt involvement.

Yep, identical.

I do feel for those south of us.  It seems to me the cartels run the country not the government.  Every time a politician or reporter tries to do something about it they end up dead.  Not even sure if their army is to be trusted and I only envision it getting worse and spreading this way.

I gotta call you out on your micro-aggression here, referring to north as up or south as down (Or under) is clearly a microaggression placing the USA "above" Mexico.

(Mostly tongue in cheek, but this is evidently really a thing now.)

"evidence from psychology suggests that our north-up culture might be polluting the way we think of what is valuable in the world."

I'm just glad that the same logic allows Americans to think of themselves as being "under" Canadians.  Grin

I have recently been leading a Bible study in the book of Acts, where it often describes people going "up" to Jerusalem, regardless of what direction people are traveling from to get there, even from Antioch, 300 miles north of Jerusalem.

Ya'll may be a little misguided in some ways, but overall we love our hat!

Even in modern times, Jewish people around the world use the Hebrew word "עליה" (Pronounced "Aliyah") to describe the immigration of Jewish people in the diaspora to Israel.

The literal translation of the word is "Ascent".

So they're literally saying they're going up to Israel.
