Good morning all, I know a few of you own an ST. Can't say I remember who that is. Always liked them and wanted one. I owned a 2000 Connie a few years back. Wanted the ST but, when I saw the Fire Engine Red Connie. Bought it on the spot and never went and looked at black ST . That's how I ended up here, a VRCC member. Never grew to really like the Kaw. Just as I had read, buzzy pegs and handlebars. Loved that motor! . Sold the Kaw after 1 year and 1 year later became the owner of a '97 Valk and as they say "the rest is history". Found an ST locally w/26k on the clock and appears (Craigslist pics) to have been taken care of. Not many miles for the year. We all know that's not necessarily a good thing. Asking $3500, at end of ad says make offer. KBB says $2300 if purchased at dealer. Never have really went by KBB when it came to a M/C purchase. Just had no idea what they are going for. I think $3500 is high. Don't see many for sale, though. I know or at least I think I know, they are reliable. Any quirks to keep an eye out for? No ABS on this one and he(2nd owner) doesn't know which alternator he has. Any input will be appreciated. I am going to look at it today around 1 or so.

I was in the market for an ST1100 when I bought my ST1300. Carbs vs. FI and FI won out.
That 1100 is over-priced for sure. I regularly see them in the $2000 range on Craigslist. High mileage ones go for even less $.

Serk,
Thanx for the info. The black one has been for sale for sometime at the Yamaha dealer. Just never rode out to look. The other 2, I was not aware of. Have to admit the price of '93 was appealing. With the assumption I may get it much cheaper. Blue '04 has my interest. Few upgrades that I like.

1100 prices dropped a lot after the 1300 came out. myself I prefer carbs. 1100 is still good for 100ks of miles. only buy '96 and newer. they came with the higher output 40amp air-cooled alternator. before that is was a weak 28amp oil bath unit, but they can be convertor to the new oem ones.
'96-'02 had other small updates. most significant was the ABS system starting this yr included wider front wheel, 3-piston calipers, linked braking, fork diameter increase, and first yr for oem radials. the non-abs model only received the alt update. most want the abs model due to better handling of the larger fork and braking. although there are many all yrs that have been upgraded by owners. the rear shock is done at 30-40k miles. same final drive spline maintenance as valkyrie. front wheel bearing can be weak. even with the fork dia increase experts call for stronger front springs. there are many out there with lots of farkles for $2-3k. there were no changes from '97-'02 except paint, from last article I read. I don't own one just did a lot of research yrs ago, but went with the valkyrie in '00 instead.

They are trying to sell it as a collector it is priced to high 2000 to 2400 max if all stock. Is there any usable extras like a Russell day long seat, heated grips, top case, cc, piaa spot lights? You can get a used 1300 for the 3500 with lots of extras and low miles. I have a 2010 st1300 set up for cross country travel all use able extras below 40K miles and it will not bring but 4 to 5. The st market is not real good it is hard to find st 1300 in dealer show rooms sense 2011 they just did not stock them. There are other sport tourers out there unless the st is what your set on. This is my second 1300 and my second valk as well, like both bikes but total different animals.

$3500 is high for an 1100 unless it is immaculate and/or has many added on farkles. I would say $1200 - $1800. Many nice examples of the ST1100 line available for $3500.
A '93 came with an oil cooled 28 amp alt. Changed to a "car" type in '96. The 28 amp model doesn't leave much of a margin after running the bike. It works and many guys have lots of miles on it. If it craps out, the cost is about the same or less to upgrade to the 40 amp alt. It doesn't matter which one you go with, they are both a bear to change out. There are 3 fairly common problems on the 1100, all fairly easy and cheap to fix.. The radiator over flow hose makes a sharp curve just after leaving the radiator neck. The hose cracks in that area. It still flows coolant to the over flow bottle but won't pull it back into the system because the hose leaks and looses the vac. The motor overheats with a lot of coolant showing in the reservoir. Another one is the diaphragm for the vac. operated fuel valve developes a leak and won't open the fuel valve all the way. Leads to poor performance and smell of gas. A 3rd problem is the wire that feeds the accessories over heats at a crimp connecter. It eventually stops conducting power. There is a relatively easy low cost fix. The main symptom is turning the key on and every thing but the clock being dead.
The 1100 V-4 is smooth and will last almost forever. The shaft drive is another labor saving feature. All models have a 7.4 gallon tank.

I had an ST1100. i didn't have it long enough to have problems with it. However, the headlight bulbs were expensive, not standard. It was a bear to change oil. The charging systelm was marginal.
Handling was great as was the smoothness of the V4 even though it sounded too industrial.

The head light lamps are Honda items and expensive. It looks like an H4 but the tabs are not the same. The lamps are 45/45 due to US DOT regulations. A shim is available to use with H$ lamps. The shims are about $15 a set and can be used over and over.

As usual thanx for all the input! Went and looked at the '93. It is in, incredible shape. I said I was in the looking stages and had a couple newer ones with more features plus only a few hundred $$ more then his asking price($3500.), to look at. Of course he said, "make me an offer." Lol, I thought about this situation on the ride there. Wasn't sure what my response would be. One of those, I'll insult/piss you off offers. I passed on the offer and said, "thanks for your time." I won't rule out going back. I will keep an eye out to see if it sells. Based on what I'm seeing, I think it will be for sale for awhile. I will take a look at the ST owners site. Everybody have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!
