I chucked the shot put in Jr Hi (8lb) and Sr Hi too (12lb, mercury ball because the solid metal one was too big for my hands). Small schools.
Early on (with young people), speed and good technique can make up for size, bulk and raw strength. I got a couple first places at 40+ feet on the 12 pounder, but also went up against a guy who won the MI state championship a couple years in a row. And he was huge and could stand at the front of the circle and beat me by 12 feet with no windup, just a straight pitch.
At the end of year league meet, the girls hung out at the shot put event to watch the muscle men take off their sweats. At 150lbs wet, when I took off my sweats, there was distinct giggling (and I was out in the first round).
I did better in the 100 and 220 and the sprint relays.
