I have the pipes off and the desmog kit installed.  I've replaced most of the fuel and vacuum tubing while I'm in this far.  I found a very small oil leak starting from the shift rod at the tranny case that I'd like to fix while the pipes are off.

Can the used seal be removed and replaced with a new one without opening the tranny?  Any suggestions or tips?

Thanks,
CB

Thanks Chrisj.  I have the new one in hand, so I'm good to go.

Put a dab of grease on the inside of that seal Before you install it. Also clean the opening Before install of new seal. Onlyiest time She EVER leaked oil on mine were from that shifter seal. RIDE SAFE.

I just did mine a few days ago. Piece of cake. I was changing exhaust gaskets and my oil anyway. I drilled a tiny hole in the seal and screwed a drywall screw into it just enough to grip and was able to pull it out by hand. I greased up the new seal and pressed it most of the way in by hand and used the round end of a box end wrench to finish pushing it in. Done.
