Still waiting for parts for the forks, so I was cleaning up some stuff here and there on my recently purchased 98.
I have noticed that the throttle cable rubs on the inside of the windshield a bit, so I was looking at the routing by the triple clamps, and then I realized it. I only have one throttle cable; not an A + B like I see on every picture of every first gen Valk.
So, obviously, someone has been there and did some butchery. The throttle assembly has the port for the second cable, and the threads are a bit corroded, so it's been running with one for awhile.
I don't regret buying a Valk, but I'm starting to wish I bought a different one.
What else will I find? I can hardly wait to find out...

I bought a 99 tourer a few years back. There were a couple flaws I knew I would need to address in the near future. I have spent a little more than I saved, but I’ve learned a lot (mostly from people on this wonderful site) of great tips and tricks and know my bike much better. The only thing wrong with the Valkyries is it’s hard to find certain parts you may want. I will never regret the move to a Valk. I have been riding for 42 years and this is one of my favorite bikes. Worth ihe wrenching.

Someone bypassed the vacuum petcock mechanism and plugged the ports, as has been detailed on the forum. After having one of the sons&$%#@$es strand me last year with ~500mi on a new (failed) cover set, I'm now carrying the parts to field-modify the petcock and eliminate the particular function. |

Bagger John. crap can the OEM POS fuel shutoff and replace it with a Pingle. No more fuel problems and worrys about hydro lock. I did when mine started leaking 15 years and 120k miles ago.

When I bought Rota (a 1998 Standard) it didn't take long to realize she had been rode hard and put up wet. There were very few minor alterations, so no problems there, but maintenance left a lot to be desired. I was very happy at first, but there where times I felt like you did, why did I buy this bike. So I spent a lot more time on maintenance. Peace of mind maintenance that I would have done anyway. She became a labor of love, and I have enjoyed "almost" every minute of it. I'm still glad I bought her and enjoy our time together.
I have since added a second standard, dressed up like a tourer. Rota has become more of an around town bike while Edda handles the longer trips, but suprisingly both bikes share about equal road time.

When I buy a Valk , it is just common practice to go thru it. Wheel maintenance , desmog , vacuum and fuel lines. If brakes are questionable , rebuild. Done and gone. Also carbs.
