Found an issue with my final drive splines when I pulled her apart to change out the tire and do the rear end service, upon returning home from Valhalla. So, she's still up on the jack waiting for me to come up with a solution. My preferred option is to try and find a complete drive unit in good shape (my shaft and wheel flange splines are still good), so I was wondering if any of my Vermin friends might have one laying around or know where one might be?

Thx, Mike

When I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, several members of the board had nice used units available. I got and used one then, worked great and was quick and easy.

You might advertise in the classifieds as I did.

Wasn't it John (& Gina) Lane who redid his, using the one off a Goldwing. They can be had for a lot less.

In my GW pictures, I have a note saying I have a GW rear end.

ps: some how it posted twice, you can delete now before someone posts a reply to it.

Are you referring to the pinion cup splines? If so, why not just replace the pinion cup? Seems easier than trying to find a good assembly.

No, the pinion cup is OK,

... it's the ring gear splines that are excessively worn.

The wheel flange splines are decent and I have a new spare one as well.

Finding a decent complete drive unit is the easiest and quickest solution...if that doesn't work out then I will look at purchasing the components necessary to rebuild new.

After seeing the pictures  if it was my bike I would  put it back together and ride it. I wouldn't want to drag race it but should get you through the season. Was it noisy or vibrating or growling before you took it apart? All those splines are supported by bearings and the axle to keep them concentric. Keep an eye open for a used final drive and change it out this winter. I have a spare drive that I bought years ago that needs rebuilding for the same issue.  You can use it to rebuild  with new parts for installation on your bike for less down time  if you want. I would want your old drive once you change it out.

I've usually seen Valk rears going for over $600 USD. A new gear set is over $300 USD.

I think I bought my used GW rear for $50. They come up from time-to-time, I just keep my eyes open.

I just need to find it. You can have it, just replace with another, when ever the price is right.

Found one locally here which after a thorough cleaning appears to be in at least a bit better shape wear-wise than mine. Thinking that I just might do what you and Dusty suggest...put her back together with this one and rebuild mine or find a lower mileage one that I can switch out to in the Winter   Thx cooldude

Hey Brother it was great sharing wind with you at Valhalla! If you search this chapter of the forum for "winter project" you will find my write up with pics on how I used a gl1500 goldwing final drive to rebuild my valkyrie final drive. It has worked flawlessly since Jan 2015 about 60000 miles

Thanks John, will check it out. Looks like I've found a useable Valk drive so I hope to be up and running this weekend. I've also been offered a couple 1500 Wing drives, so I may rebuild mine to use as a spare … if I can figure it out...
Great to meet and ride with you guys too...hope we can do it again soon cooldude

Finally ... back on the road. Found a decent rear drive locally, and after several delays (finding the drive, waiting for new wheel bearings to come in and then have the local dealer install them backwards and then waiting again for another new kit to be installed properly, finding zero side collar spacers in Canada to replace my worn one but having Buffalo Bob deliver one to me in person from Everret Powersports (any excuse for a ride, eh Bob?), I'm all buttoned up with new tire and ready for Lisa and I to ride to Port Angeles next weekend cooldude
Thanks to all for your suggestions and advice, especially SteveH, Jeff (ChrisjCMA) from Florida, Rob (Meathead) from Arizona, Dusty, and Beardo for helping me lose my virginity doing this service myself and figuring out subsequent issues.

Good to hear Mike. They put the bearings in the wrong sides?  LOL
It's good that brake arm caused problems or you wouldn't know they were installed wrong.
