The only time that I've had a temp light come on was when the water pump went bad.

But it was also making a noise and it started to drip a little antifreeze.

Depending on the model year it could be this:

You can find these temp indicator units on Pinwall's Ebay site.   If you look through the different ones that Pinwall puts up sometimes you can get all the relays and such from under the left side cover for the same price, not expensive at all.    Don't just look for Temp Indicator, look for relays.    A lot of times they don't list the proper name for it and just pull everything from that location and throw it all in a plastic bag listed as relays on the buy-it-now.   You will see from the pic that it is the relays and the indicator unit in one bundle.

Simple plug and play.   Just remove the coolant overflow tank under the left side cover and you will see all the relays and that temp indicator.

If that thing wasn't flexible plastic it'd be harder to take off than
an alternator or starter  Smiley

My 97 Valk did this about 5 years ago and scared the crap out of me. Once I did the research and determined it was harmless the light never flickered again. My understanding is that unless you want to use salvaged parts (which will also fail) this "problem" can't be fixed.
