The MI Rogue Riders Chapter has experienced 2 open rotor alternator failures this year. Does anyone have the procedure, or pictures of how to repair them? I seem to remember some one saying resoldering the wire solder joints does the trick. I find it hard to believe the wire itself would fail in the windings. Any help appreciated. TIA.

Had that happen 3 times so far. First time was around 60000 miles and a month out of warrenty but the shop manager talked to the rep and Honda made good on it, parts/labor. The second time was around 130000. Pulled it and took it to a different Honda shop. They replaced rotor and brushes. Failed with in 3 mo. Pulled it again and took it to the local starter/alternator shop. The found 2 bad solder spot. They fixed that and it's still working great at 172000 miles. Take it to a shop and let them check it out. Worked for me.

Thanks guys, I looked at those posts, problem is a lot of the photos don't display. This problem is not with my bike, but with my chapter bretheren's bikes. Since we've been swapping batteries from my bike when theirs died, I want to be able to fix my alternator if it goes after the severe duty cycles I've been subjecting it to. One trip was from Gettysburg to MI, and the last one was all day Sunday. I think I wore out the battery terminal bolts on my bike we changed it so many times  .

i did this on my 1981 cb900ss would not hold until i used silver solder than never had a issue again. i think ill buy a spare to put on the shelf for the rainny day

I had mine checked at a alt place and he redid the bearings all for less then $75. If you have a guy you trust it might be a better way to go. If not send it down to me and i'll take it into town to mine. I have a spare alt if he is in dyer need of one. I don't think i'll need it right away, although my volt meter is doing some funky stuff.

Thanks fudgie, I don't think he will be needing it real soon, has one on order, just want to get the bad one repaired so there is a spare in the chapter.

I second the recommendation above. Ken's (MARS) rebuilds are top notch. Take it from someone who opened up five rotors in 2500 miles. I had an audio amp that the previous owner had put on, and it was burning 'em up. The local shop rebuilt mine, it lasted ~100 miles each. I sent it to Ken. His lasted ~3000 miles. Same conditions. I finally took out that amp, and Ken's second rebuild is still going strong ~5000 later (and I've tested it hard, with buddy riding like has been described above). So, step 1) order a rebuild from Ken. Step 2) While you're waiting for your rebuild to arrive, start stripping off aftermarket electronics. It worked for me.
