Did something today that terrified me, shook me to my very core.

Took my eldest spawn to a local high school parking lot, and put her in the driver's seat of my Standard.

(I've had the bike longer than I've had her!)

Few rough starts, but she was running around the parking lot running through the gears (Up to 3rd), back down through the gears, stopping, starting again, in no time.

The whole time I had a lump in my throat, terrified something might happen to my baby!

Of course, I was worried about my daughter as well... Wink

With any luck she'll be getting her 250cc and under motorcycle license shortly and will start getting herself to the places she needs to be on the scooter my dad gave her:

Keith Code has written several books on how to ride a motorcycle ..."Twist of the Wrist" included...a track day will add more to your daughters riding skills than thousands of super slab riding---look up "RIDE SMART"  Cresson is a little over an hour away...

Awesome!    2003 me and my 1999 Valkyrie and a friend on a Harley did the Saddle sore from Tomball Tx (Houston area) to Fort Stockton and back.    Then in 2006 on my 2001 Valkyrie and a friend on a VTX 1800 did the Bun Burner Gold 1500 in 24 hrs from Kerrville Tx  across NM to Benson Arizona and back in 23 hrs 10 minutes.   Think k I'm done with anything farther than that....ha

One more small step today.

The most terrifying trip I've ever made to Wal Mart.

Kali rode "her" bike and I rode one of my Valkyries.

Her very first time on a bike on the road.

Her very first time in control of any vehicle on the road without an experienced driver in the same vehicle.

I followed, keeping a close eye on her and protecting her 6.

She did great! But of course I'm still terrified.

...she takes her driving test Friday. *Gulp*

Boy Serk.... learning on a parking lot is nerve wracking enough but to get out in traffic would be scary.   Good luck with it.

I was on motorcycles in the dirt from age 14 and have enjoyed motorcycles for 54 yrs with only 1 major wreck.   I started my sons on motorcycles around age 7 or 8.   Many good memories.   Now I have a 9 yr old gson that just really has the desire to get a small dirt bike.    His dad is ok ( my son) but his mom says he will never have one.   Man.... I really feel for him as When his age I used to drull over every bike I saw.    I am having a hard time accepting his Moms decision but have to respect it also.

Or, you and your son could do right by your grandson and overrule the Mom.  If she wants to prevent him from racing, OK, but for her to deny her son the opportunity to explore, and perhaps pursue an interest, is wrong.  Who knows, he might not like it.  Or, it could provide the basis for three generations of shared experiences.

Ha Disco....  yeah we could do that.... but “Unhappy Wife, Unhappy life”.  Both parents will have to say “OK”.    When my oldest boy was 8 I bought a used small Yamaha dirt bike and brought it home and told the wife “Look what we bought”!   Ha

Full disclosure: I got my first mini-bike at 9.  It was a pull-start Tecumseh that I couldn't start by myself.  If I killed it, I had to push it home (sure taught me throttle control, though).  My first kick-start, 3-speed, automatic clutch was a 1971 Suzuki MT-50 Trailhopper my grandfather bought me.  Although my father never got the bike bug, my grandfather and his brother rode all over the south on their Henderson and Indian, respectively.

I moved on to a Kawasaki KS-125, a Suzuki GT-550 I rode to high school, and a second year 600 Ninja before a self-imposed 21-year layoff.  Granted, I don't know how my Mom slept at night, but I survived.

Enter the Valkyrie, a GL1800 Goldwing (that didn't survive), an F800GS, a couple more Valkyries, a '78 CB500K, and now a Yamaha FJR 1300 ES.

Forty-six years later, I still have the Trailhopper.   angel

Easy for me to say, but I hope the three of you will work on the Mom...

Man I know you got some good memories on those old bikes .

My parents started out saying no but they could see the desire I had to have a motorcycle.    When I was around 12 or so my cousin who lived in the country out of Paris, Tx got a Cushman. I don't remember what model.... but anyways.....I got to spend the summer on their 600 acre ranch with him and we rode that Cushman all over the countryside.    End of summer my Dad came to pick me up and I got him to ride the Cushman and he liked riding it.   Took a couple yrs to work on Mom but finally she said ok and I got my first bike a Sears nd Robuck Allstate Compact .   My riding career started there and my dad got us a couple dirt bikes when I was in high school and we would go with a group to Huntsville Tx area in the Sam Houston National Forest and run the trails.    Best memories I have with doing things with my Dad.
