My Tourer has an HID headlight. It sucks. Bright but not a focused light. Awful at night.

I have an LED unit to replace it and one of Josh's adapter rings.

Dana uses the LED unit and approves of it.

LED came with the same standard 3 prong fitting as the Valkyrie has.

Mine of course doesn't because of the HID.

Will I need to replace the headlight wiring all the way back to its source? Wherever that is  Embarrassed

If so do I need to buy a Honda replacement bit of wiring?

Or can I just splice into the existing wiring so long as I do that on the power side before the ballast for the HID.

If so what gauge do I use?

Please, please reply in very easy to understand terms. No electrical gobbleygook.

#14 wire can handle 15 amps. That should handle any current you need. I have no HID experience. The 3 prong headlight plug should be available locally at an auto parts store.

of the headlight wiring harnesses for $12, I have the manual, and the forum here
has lots of people who know what's what... can you tell if parts have been
cut out of your harness?

#14 wire has 3 separate strands to fit the 3 prong plug?

Or do I need to ask for 3 strand wire?

Answered my own question with a Google search.

I have to get 14/3 wire!

Not yet. Bike still in one piece until the cooler weather arrives.


I'm running the bike using the 2 spotlights on the light bar. No stops by cops yet.

HID stopped working. I replace ballast and bulb.

Need the better light from an LED unit.

Your best option would be to get a wire replacement from Pinwall. That way you avoid all the possible problems associated with a "jury rig" job and it comes with the proper plug.

Don't be foolish, trying to save a couple of bucks. Keep your bike as much OEM as possible.

Most HID kits, as far as I've seen, plug into the original 3-pin connector for power; the ones that have hi/lo beam switching will also have a direct cable to the battery to power the solenoid that moves the bulb, but you won't need that. Did you cut your H4 connector off to wire it directly? If not, follow the cable back from the HID regulator, and you should find the original connector.

The HID harness might have just plugged into the stock headlight socket without splicing into or cutting any original wiring.  If this is the case, it might just be a matter of unplugging that harness and plugging in the LED headlight.  Easy peasy, I hope!

You might want to take a picture of the wiring inside the headlight shell and post it. Try to include the back of the headlight itself.
Hubcap's sugestion is a good one. The wiring harness from Pinwall would not be plug and play but a source of replacement wiring to make yours whole again. As for the 14 gauge wire, it is multi-strand and you would need three separate 14 gauge wires for the headlight.

I'll take some photos soon.


Next job is to get a new front tire fitted before the Meet In the Middle ride.

Tire is pretty smooth across the center third.

Killed this Shinko in 8,000 miles. With Dyna Beads!

Last Shinko lasted 9,000 miles with Dyna Beads.

Living in the N GA mountains comes at a cost re tire wear. No more 4 lane boredom to start a ride.

I just pulled the wiring loose from the headlight shell.

Eeeeek!

It seems there's more wiring for the HID than an octopus has legs. Relays and stuff.

It might be above my pay grade to try to do the rewire.

Anyone fancy a trip to the bootiful N GA Mtns?????

I'll buy beer and BBQ and some financial recompense.
