Got leaking fuel rail issues on my 99 standard. Gonna order the Redeye kit but wanted to know if there are any tutorials or things to watch out for when splitting the rack. Some of the other bikes I have done carb work on had tiny ball bearings, screws, springs, etc. that had to go back a particular way or were easily lost during disassembly. I've looked around quite a bit but haven't found anything online or here that talks specifically about splitting the rack. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Rich includes detailed instructions with his big overhaul kit.  It seems a bit scary, but if you are minimally proficient and orderly you won’t have any problems.

Make sure you order the new screws too.  Take pictures along the way for reference.  There are five springs that Rich calls “flying springs”.  He includes new replacements in case you lose one or two in the garage.

I just did this complete job last month using the redeyetech kit and screws.  Feel free to pm if you run into issues and I will gladly share any tips that I learned.

Be sure to get a set of JIS screwdrivers from Amazon (or others).  This will help immensely during disassembly.  Do you have a mityvac?  This is needed if you plan on rebuilding and testing your air cut valves and also for installing and testing the bowl gaskets.

I bought all new jets, pilots, and float valves.  Also installed all new fuel and air tubing.  If you plan to do this make sure all parts are on hand before starting or else you will be laid up waiting for parts.  I also installed a fuel filter with quick disconnect that I bought from redeyetech.

Do one side at a time
Three right or three left carbs. Less chance of a mix up.

Sorry I should have been more precise with my question. I am not rebuilding the carbs, bike runs great as is. I just need to break the rack and change out the fuel rail o rings to stop a leak. And maybe the air rail o rings as well as it sounds like they disintegrate when the air rail is separated.

Just the fuel rail/ carb rack, not the carbs. This time.

Thanks!

Ok then....

Redeyetech has a tool with spacers that help with separating/prying apart the individual carbs without breaking something.  If they haven’t been apart before then you may have trouble with the rusted dowels.

You might as well get the delrin dowels too...for future ease in separating the carbs...

There are springs that fit between the carbs and the flying springs may also be encountered when you split the banks.  It’s not hard, just look at the service manual diagram to help with re-assembly.

If I need to allow my bike to sit for over a year, my fuel rails will leak also.

FORTUNATELY so far.........and wait an hour or so, they stop leaking after sitting in gas for a while.  I DO drain the carb's out completely in storage.

So my time is coming also.  One of these times I am sure waiting, won't work anymore. NOT a job I am looking forward to doing, at all............ Cry

I did this recently also with the red eye kit. I would highly recommend replacing the carb bowl gaskets at the same time. I believe red eye recommends this. I fixed my fuel rail leak put it all back together and yep the f-ing bowls were leaking also.  I about wanted to cry.

Not a job anybody wants to do over...I’m with you.

Avoiding a do-over is why I always replace the jets with new, rather than cleaning them.  I’ve had buddies try cleaning their jets, and in at least a couple of examples they ended up pulling the carbs again and then putting in new jets.
